Democrats near win on child health bill
Democrats are edging closer to giving President Barack Obama a big victory on health care. The Senate was expected to vote Thursday on legislation that would spend $31.5 billion more on a children's health insurance program over the next 4 1/2 years. The additional money would help about 4 million uninsured children get coverage and draw 2.4 million more kids into the program who otherwise could get private coverage.'It's a major step forward for our nation,' said Sen. Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M., in anticipation of the Senate's action. 'Many Americans face grave economic uncertainty, and it's critical that we move quickly to pass this legislation and send it to President Obama for his signature.'

Hurdles Facing Unused Prescription Drug Repositories
Americans spend some $200 billion annually on prescription drugs. Since 1997, in an effort to keep a lid on costs, 37 states have enacted legislation allowing patients, their families and health care facilities to recycle good, unused pills through local pharmacies for donation to patients lacking sufficient insurance. Thousands of patients could in principle benefit from these “drug repository” laws. But as well intentioned as these efforts are, practical problems have prevented widespread implementation of such programs. The guidelines for these laws, which began thanks to the lobbying efforts of families of cancer patients, are fairly consistent throughout the country. Donated medications must be in sealed, tamper-evident packaging and usually must be within no more than six months of their expiration date. Pharmacies are not held liable should the drug’s next owner come to unexpected harm from the medication. Some repositories accept cancer drugs only; others take

Older Americans have experienced huge, negative financial shifts that now make it more difficult to enter retirement with sustainable economic security, a new study finds. Study: Learning science facts doesn`t boost science reasoning
(Ohio State University) A study of college freshmen in the United States and in China found that Chinese students know more science facts than their American counterparts -- but both groups are nearly identical when it comes to their ability to do scientific reasoning. Neither group is especially skilled at reasoning, however, and the study suggests that educators must go beyond teaching science facts if they hope to boost students' reasoning ability.

New animated films challenge false representation of Native Americans in the media
(University of Missouri-Columbia) Popular film and television shows have shaped the way Americans view American history -- especially the frontier encounters between settlers and Native Americans. Examining the ways Native Americans are portrayed negatively in Westerns and other film genres, Joanna Hearne, assistant professor of English at the University of Missouri, describes recently produced animated films by Native directors that are countering media misrepresentations and helping promote Native-American stories and languages.
