Fishing nations failing on sustainability
More than 40% of the world's fishing is carried out unsustainably and largely in defiance of international codes of conduct, according to a new study. The team that carried out the research said that voluntary schemes to prevent overfishing should be replaced with binding international laws that can better protect marine ecosystems.Scientists graded the 53 major fishing nations - those that take 96% of the world's marine catch - on how their intentions matched actions in complying with the UN's code, a voluntary measure developed in 1995 as a potential way to tackle overfishing. The code sets out criteria on how countries should implement the right type of equipment for how fish are caught and how to minimise ecosystem impacts such as catching unwanted fish species that have to be thrown back into the sea and minimising effects on dolphins and other mammals.Norway comes top of the list with a compliance rate of 60%, followed by the United States, Canada, Australia, Iceland and Namibia.I

Rapid Thinking Makes People Happy
Lousy day? Don’t try to think happy thoughts--just think fast. A new study shows that accelerated thinking can improve your mood. In six experiments, researchers at Princeton and Harvard universities made research participants think quickly by having them generate as many problem-solving ideas (even bad ones) as possible in 10 minutes, read a series of ideas on a computer screen at a brisk pace or watch an I Love Lucy video clip on fast-forward. Other participants performed similar tasks at a relaxed speed. Results suggested that thinking fast made participants feel more elated, creative and, to a lesser degree, energetic and powerful. Activities that promote fast thinking, then, such as whipping through an easy crossword puzzle or brain-storming quickly about an idea, can boost energy and mood, says psychologist Emily Pronin, the study’s lead author. ASPS Twins Study Finds Environmental Factors Trump Genetics In Facial Aging
Your mother's wrinkles - or lack there of, may not be the best predictor of how you'll age. In fact, a new study claims just the opposite. The study, involving identical twins, suggests that despite genetic make-up, certain environmental factors can add years to a person's perceived age.

Tobacco Smoke And Alcohol Harm Liver Worse As Combo
Exposure to second-hand smoke and alcohol significantly raises the risk of liver disease, according to researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). The finding adds to mounting evidence that tobacco smoke and alcohol are worse for health as a combination, beyond the individual exposure risks, said Shannon Bailey, Ph.D., an associate professor in the UAB Department of Environmental Health Sciences and a co-lead author on the study.

Marine General, Scholars Concur that More Study is Unnecessary and Could Have Political Costs
A retired Brigadier General for the U.S. Marine Corps has questioned the Obama administration's plan to form a Pentagon commission to study 'don't ask, don't tell.' 'There's been enough studying throughout the years,' said General Hugh Aitken. 'Creating a new study will not change the facts.' Aitken participated in a comprehensive 2008 review of the policy which found that there is no evidence showing that openly gay service would harm the military, and a great deal of evidence showing it would not. According to a February 1st Boston Globe report, the Obama administration has decided not to move forward on repealing 'don't ask, don't tell' until the Pentagon can 'undertake a detailed study of how a change in the policy would affect the military.' This may not happen for several months or longer, says the Globe article. But scholars echoed General Aitken's argument.
