LISTEN: Audio of media call on introduction of immigration reform legislation Paul Schindler of the Gay City News has a great writeup of yesterday's media call that discussed the congressional reintroduction of the Uniting American Families Act (UAFA), legislation that would allow gay and lesbian couples to sponsor their international partners for immigration purposes. Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) and Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) are the lead sponsors of the legislation. In the last Congress, the bill was tabled as the overall political battle - and rhetoric - over immigration reform intensified. Nadler is hopeful that the political landscape may have shifted in the bill's favor - but still remains cautious. The audio from yesterday's media call with Congressman Jerrold Nadler, Sen. Patrick Leahy, Joe Solmonese, John Amaya of MALDEF and Rachel Tiven of Immigration Equality on the bill's introduction can be downloaded from the link listed for this story. topix.netFollowing Peanut Product Recall, Six in Ten Americans Taking Steps to Reduce Their Risk of Getting Sick Many Mistakenly Believe Recall Involves National Brands of Peanut Butter and Are Not Aware of the Range of Products Involved Kansas City InfoZineUS: Obama Should Appoint Commission to Investigate 9/11-Related Abuses (Washington, DC) - President Barack Obama should appoint a nonpartisan commission to investigate and examine detention, treatment, and transfer of detainees following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Human Rights Watch and 17 other leading rights organizations said today.read more Human Rights WatchA Recipe for Motivation: Easy to Read, Easy to Do One of the most famous American cartoonists of the 20th century was Rube Goldberg, who was widely known for his “Goldberg machines.” Each of these comical inventions depicted a complex set of “instructions” for completing what should have been a fairly simple everyday task. His Self-Operating Napkin, for example, required 13 sequential steps involving a parrot, a cigar lighter, a rocket and a sickle--along with various strings, springs and pendulums. The cartoons were funny because they poked good-natured fun at a fundamental irony of human psychology. People will make even the simplest task much more complicated than it needs to be, yet all this overexplaining rarely helps. Indeed, the opposite is often true: Goldberg’s convoluted “how-to” instructions may make us laugh, but they also leave us feeling exhausted. If that is what it takes to use a napkin, why would we bother? [More] Scientific AmericanAre Older Teachers Too Jaded to Be Effective? This comes at a time when the nature of reading is changing — and not necessarily for the better. NPRSurvival Rates Still Low Even Though Cancer Death Rates Dropping Among African Americans While death rates from cancer continue to drop among African Americans, the group continues to be diagnosed at more advanced stages and have lower survival rates at each stage of diagnosis compared to whites for most cancer sites. The findings come from Cancer Facts & Figures for African Americans 2009-2010, the latest edition of a report produced every two years by the American Cancer Society, the nation's leading voluntary health organization. medicalnewstoday.com |
