Openly gay Oakland Park deputy receives employee of the year A former graduate student at George Washington University and intern for U.S. Senator Bill Nelson of Florida, Bleiweiss has been an officer with BSO for over six years. He was nominated for the award by his shift supervisors, Sergeants John Nash and Kelvin Phillips, and a panel of field training officers and sergeants reviewed the 15 to 20 nominees. Final voting is done by secret ballot. Broward County Sheriff's Department Deputy, Jonathan Bleiweiss, 28, received the 2008 Employee of the Year award for the Oakland Park Division for his outstanding work, at a ceremony on the evening of Wednesday, March 4, 2009 at the Oakland Park City Hall. This is the first time an openly gay deputy received this award from BSO. Bleiweiss credits his success to a supportive environment within the Broward Sheriff's department. 'I think it shows how far we've come in the world when a police worker, an openly gay officer, could achieve an award like this,' Bleiweiss said.
