ACLU Sues South Dakota Secretary Of State Over Illegal Voter Disfranchisement
SIOUX FALLS, SD - The American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit in federal court today to restore the voting rights of two American Indian women who were illegally disfranchised in November's election. The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of South Dakota on behalf of Kim Colhoff and Eileen Janis, who attempted to vote last fall but were improperly removed from the voter rolls due to felony convictions. Because state law only disfranchises individuals sentenced to prison and both women were just sentenced to probation, election officials unlawfully took away their voting rights.

ACLU And Advancement Project Challenge Unlawful Disenfranchisement Of Michigan Resident
DETROIT - Today, Advancement Project, the American Civil Liberties Union and Pepper Hamilton LLP filed a motion on behalf of Lisa A. Blehm - a Michigan resident who was improperly disenfranchised in the November election - that would allow her to join a previously filed voting rights lawsuit challenging the state's unlawful voter purge programs. The motion was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan against Michigan Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land, Michigan Bureau of Elections Director Christopher M. Thomas and Standish City Clerk Rebecca Lakin.

Judge Rules School Board Elections Violate Voting Rights Act
COLUMBIA, SC - A federal judge ruled late Thursday that the method of electing members to a South Carolina county school board resulted in unlawful racial discrimination in violation of the Voting Rights Act. The decision comes in a long-running American Civil Liberties Union lawsuit challenging Lexington County School District Three elections that dilute the minority vote. In her ruling, Judge Margaret B. Seymour of the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina ordered new proposals to change the election method within 60 days.

Supreme Court Briefs Claim Cuban Spies Received Unfair Trial in Miami
Nobel laureates, scholars and international organizations have flooded the U.S. Supreme Court with legal briefs in support of five convicted Cuban spies, arguing the defendants were sandbagged from the start because the Miami trial took place in a city defined by decades of anti-Castro fervor. A dozen amicus briefs focus mainly on a judge's refusal to move the trial north to Fort Lauderdale. But a brief by Howard University law professors has particularly offended the Cuban-American community, some say.

There is an obvious and overdue way to improve Americans' health care without raising taxes, curtailing insurance coverage for those who already have it, burdening employers with higher costs or jeopardizing the two big government health insurance programs for the elderly and the poor.

ACLU Tells Arizona School To Lift Rainbow Ban
PEORIA, AZ - After a school principal told a gay 14-year-old student to turn his rainbow wristband inside-out or stop wearing it to school, the American Civil Liberties Union today demanded that the school district rescind its ban of the wristband. In a letter sent to Peoria Unified School District, the ACLU said that the principal's demand violates Chris Quintanilla's constitutional rights, pointing to a 40-year-old landmark Supreme Court decision guaranteeing students' free speech and expression.
