Hundred water voles released in Devon to aid resurgent population
Environment Agency hopes Lower Axe Valley will become home to small colonies of the once common rodentAround 100 water voles were released to the waterways of Devon yesterday as part of a nationwide effort to save one of Britain's most popular animals. Numbers of the vole, immortalised as Ratty in Kenneth Grahame's Wind in the Willows, plummeted in the 1990s, and some 90% had disappeared by 2005. A series of reintroduction projects have addressed the decline, and experts say the recovering species has 'turned the corner'.Alastair Driver, chair of the UK water vole steering group and national conservation manager with the Environment Agency, which organised yesterday's release, said: 'This is just one of many projects across the country that the Environment Agency is funding to ensure the recovery of the water vole, which until recently was facing extinction and is still in a very precarious situation.'Surveys show that water vole numbers have increased in many areas, with the Sussex co

Group asks Obama not to defend Defense of Marriage Act suit
A Massachusetts gay rights group, Equal Rep, is leading an effort that is calling on President Obama to keep his promise to overturn portions of the Defense of Marriage Act by not defending an upcoming legal challenge to the law.In April, the advocacy group Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders (GLAD), filed a lawsuit on behalf of eight gay married couples and three surviving spouses from Massachusetts. In that suit they claim the federal DOMA discriminates against gay couples in that state and is unconstitutional. The plaintiffs say DOMA means they pay higher taxes because they can't file a joint return, and they can't collect spousal Social Security benefits, among other restrictions. Their lawsuit argues that the government discriminates against their marriages and infringes on their constitutional right to equal protection under the Fifth Amendment.

Why Obama Is Punting on Gay Issues
Earlier this month, the Obama administration let pass a deadline to appeal to the Supreme Court in a case regarding a decorated female Air Force officer who was discharged for having a homosexual relationship....understandably, is a confusing position, especially when taken in tandem with a Pentagon statement today that there are 'not any plans underway' to repeal 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell,' and that top military brass have only had 'preliminary' discussions with the Obama administration about doing so. But it is merely a symptom of a larger conflict facing Obama lately. More and more reports and editorials in the media cite a growing discontent among the new president's gay constituency, a group that rallied behind him aggressively during the campaign (at least after Hillary dropped out) and was an important fund-raising block.
