`Why don`t we stop hurting the planet?`
Telling our children about climate change could leave them angry, worried or even traumatised. So when and how should we do it, asks Leo Hickman'A four-year-old child could understand this! Run out and find me a four-year-old child.' For the past year or so, this Groucho Marx line from the 1933 classic Duck Soup might well have been tattooed on the inside of my eyelids. This is what happens when you undertake the challenge of writing a book for children about a subject as complex and, at times, depressing as climate change. With every turn of phrase, I've had to remind myself that we must never underestimate a child's intelligence, or their capacity and eagerness to learn something new.But as I struggled to explain concepts such as, say, the albedo effect, chlorofluorocarbons and the Milankovitch cycles, I was forever troubled by a central question: what is the right age to tell a child about climate change? And, furthermore, how do you go about discussing a subject that will be an inc

Group asks Obama not to defend Defense of Marriage Act suit
A Massachusetts gay rights group, Equal Rep, is leading an effort that is calling on President Obama to keep his promise to overturn portions of the Defense of Marriage Act by not defending an upcoming legal challenge to the law.In April, the advocacy group Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders (GLAD), filed a lawsuit on behalf of eight gay married couples and three surviving spouses from Massachusetts. In that suit they claim the federal DOMA discriminates against gay couples in that state and is unconstitutional. The plaintiffs say DOMA means they pay higher taxes because they can't file a joint return, and they can't collect spousal Social Security benefits, among other restrictions. Their lawsuit argues that the government discriminates against their marriages and infringes on their constitutional right to equal protection under the Fifth Amendment.
