Atlanta mayoral candidates meet with gay voters
Several leading Atlanta mayoral candidates attended a May 21 forum hosted by the Atlanta Stonewall Democrats and Log Cabin Republicans at Amsterdam Cafe. Speaking to the audience of LGBT residents, the candidates answered questions related to city services like zoning, police protection and Atlanta's well-publicized financial crisis. Atlanta City Council President Lisa Borders, Atlanta City Councilmember Mary Norwood, state Sen. Kasim Reed (D-Atlanta), former Atlanta finance manager Glenn Thomas, and attorney Jessie Spikes all attended. Thomas left before the forum began, while Norwood left after making an opening comment. Spikes, Reed and Borders all answered questions from the crowd of some 200 people. Reed set off a flurry of discussion among gay politicos with a two-word answer to a short question. Kyle Bailey, director of chapter and national development for the Stonewall Democrats, asked for a one-word answer to whether the candidates supported allowing same-sex couples to marry.

Gay candidate announces Charlotte council run
CHARLOTTE, NC - For the first time in Charlotte politics, an openly gay man will have his name on a ballot for city election. Owen Sutkowski, 26, assistant director of Student Life at Queens University, announced his run for the District 1 seat on the Charlotte City Council on Friday. Sutkowski is portraying himself as a fresh change for Charlotte and his district. 'I am excited to begin connecting people and ideas for change in Charlotte,' he said in a press release. 'Your voice is more than a vote. With the election of President Barack Obama, communities across the nation, including Charlotte, expressed a hopeful need for a fresh outlook on public service. Whether you have lived here for two months or 20 years, your vision and voice matter to me and our community.' A campaign kickoff will be held May 28, 6:30 p.m., at Dilworth Neighborhood Grille, 911 E. Morehead St. The first of a series of Community Cafes will be held May 19, 7 p.m. at RealEyes Bookstore at N. Davidson and 32 Sts.
