Organic food not healthier, says FSA
Report finds organic food provides no significant nutritional benefit compared with conventionally produced foodOrganic food is no healthier and provides no significant nutritional benefit compared with conventionally produced food, according to a new, independent study funded by the Food Standards Agency. But its conclusions have been called into question by experts and organic food campaigners. The report looked at evidence published over the past 50 years of the different nutrient levels found in crops and livestock from both types of farming and also at the health benefits of eating organic food. The findings, partly published today in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, contradict previous work that has found organically grown food to be nutritionally superior.Dr Alan Dangour, who led the review by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, said: 'Most studies were based on the hypothesis that eating organic food is beneficial to health. Looking at all of the studi

Nitrogen Dioxide Pollution Standards Debated
U.S. EPA's planned toughening of health standards for nitrogen dioxide (NO2) emissions is not tough enough for some advocacy groups. The EPA proposal would set a new one-hour maximum NO2 limit to prevent spikes in air pollution. The proposal also involves setting up new monitors in locations with the highest concentrations, like major roads in urban areas. The agency is proposing to retain the current annual average standard of 53 parts per billion (ppb). [More]

Beach Closing Days Nationwide Top 20,000 for Fourth Consecutive Year
The water at American beaches was seriously polluted and jeopardized the health of swimmers last year with the number of closing and advisory days at ocean, bay and Great Lakes beaches reaching more than 20,000 for the fourth consecutive year, according to the 19th annual beachwater quality report released today by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). 'Pollution from dirty stormwater runoff and sewage overflows continues to make its way to our beaches. This not only makes swimmers sick - it hurts coastal economies,' said Nancy Stoner, NRDC Water Program Co-Director. 'Americans should not suffer the consequences of contaminated beachwater. From contracting the flu or pink eye, to jeopardizing millions of jobs and billions of dollars that rely on clean coasts, there are serious costs to inaction.'

Not under our backyard, say Germans, in blow to CO2 plans
German carbon capture plan appears to be a victim of 'numbyism' - not under my backyardIt was meant to be the world's first demonstration of a technology that could help save the planet from global warming - a project intended to capture emissions from a coal-fired power station and bury them safely underground. But the German carbon capture plan has ended with CO2 being pumped directly into the atmosphere, following local opposition at it being stored underground. The scheme appears a victim of 'numbyism' - not under my backyard.Opposition to the carbon capture plan has contributed to a growing public backlash against renewable energy projects, raising fears that Europe will struggle to meet its low-carbon commitments. Last week, the Danish firm Vestas blamed British 'nimbies' opposing wind farms for its decision to close its turbine factory on the Isle of Wight. Many countries continue to use coal for generating power as it is the cheapest and most readily available fuel in the world. Stumbling Over Data: Mistakes Fuel Climate-Warming Skeptics
Even as the Obama administration moves ahead with modest plans to tackle global warming, the public relations battle on the issue is as fierce as ever. Some recent scientific stumbles haven't helped. In fact, they have given fodder to climate change skeptics, some of whom have seized on the errors to attack the credibility of scientists and sway public opinion. Many scientific organizations, such as the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies, now put data (some near real-time) on their Web sites. The information ranges from raw numbers from weather stations to computed values of, for instance, monthly global temperature anomalies, which represent temperature deviations from a historical average. Typically researchers make corrections and adjustments as they check equipment and replicate experiments. [More]
