Danny Glover and Philadelphia School Workers Announce Resolution to Dramatically Raise School Wages
PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 6 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Actor and activist Danny Glover joined Philadelphia school workers to announce a new resolution that will be introduced by Councilman Wilson Goode, Jr. The resolution could raise wages for hundreds of the lowest paid workers in Philadelphia's schools. It calls on the School Reform Commission (SRC) to adopt the 'Philadelphia 21st Century Minimum Wage and Benefits Standard.' The law, enacted in 2005 and introduced by Councilman Goode, ensures that workers employed by the city, its agencies, contractors and city financial aid recipients pay workers at least 150 percent of the federal minimum wage.

Philadelphia Cafeteria Workers Call on SEIU to Stop Election Stunts, Focus on Raising Wage Standards for All Philadelphia Workers
PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 6 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today, UNITE HERE Local 634, the union of Philadelphia School Cafeteria Employees and Noontime Aides, called on SEIU to stop its electioneering stunts. Last week, SEIU made the false claim that the '21st Century Minimum Wage Benefits Standard' applies to Philadelphia School District employees, misleading many workers to anticipate awards of back pay while ignoring their own custodial workers who are actually paid below the city minimum wage. Local 634 also called for swift passage of Councilman Goode's new bill to bring higher wages to these school employees.

Dropouts - The Nation`s Cost
A new study has found that 'the collective cost to the nation over the working life of each high school dropout (is) $292,000.' Sam Dillon wrote about the study for The New York Times yesterday in his article, 'Study Finds High Rate of Imprisonment Among Dropouts.' Researchers at Northeastern University used census and other government data to carry out the study, which tracks the employment, workplace, parenting and criminal justice experiences of young high school dropouts. They found that minority males are at the highest risk of dropping out of high school and ending up in prison. What does this mean to those of us involved in adult education? It means that GED programs can save lives, save prison visits, and save the nation money. Help just one person earn a GED, and you'll be contributing more to the country than griping about health care reform. ``Disorientation begets creative thinking.`` Benedict Carey
For many non-traditional students, returning to school can be rather disorienting. You're the odd duck. You may think you don't fit in. Something's not quite right. It may be one of the best things that could happen to your intellect. In his article for The New York Times, 'How Nonsense Sharpens the Intellect,' Benedict Carey examines how being confronted with the absurd often forces the mind to look for familiar patterns. In the process, we sometimes find the unexpected. We notice new things we wouldn't otherwise have paid attention to. Soren Kierkegaard talked about the 'sensation of the absurd,' Carey points out. Freud wrote about the uncanny, and Carroll about 'gyres and gimbles in the wabe.' 'Brain-imaging studies of people evaluating anomalies, or working out unsettling dilemmas, show that activity in an area called the anterior cingulate cortex spikes significantly,' Carey reports. So the next time you're feeling the odd duck, employ the feeling! It's a gift. Look around. Se
