A Generation After Title IX, Some Still Think `Women Can`t Play Sports`
It's been 37 years since Title IX was passed, opening doors for women and girls in higher education and sports. Yet you'd never know it from the views of some college students. In an opinion piece for today's edition of the San Jose University Spartan Daily, staff writer Angela Marino admits to overhearing a male student complain about women's sports, adding that he doesn't think women can play sports. Marino points out that it's a common perception, and one that she's run up against: A woman athlete...not only compet[es] against competitors during games, but...has to combat the entire male dominated sports media to receive its respect and get adequate coverage. I have experienced this first hand. I began playing golf when I was 10 years old. I was surrounded by older men who were more than a little skeptical of my presence on the course. Mussolini Paid by British Spies?
Benito Mussolini is best known for being a fascist Italian dictator who people think made the trains run on time (he didn't, but that's a great idea for a future Historical Myths piece...) Before that he was a socialist, and between those two, during the later years of the First World War, he was a pro-war journalist. New research published in a history of British spying, as reported in this Guardian piece, has revealed that Mussolini was paid a £100 a week by British spies to write pro-war articles to persuade the nation to remain in the war, equivalent to about £6000 today. He also used local thugs to rough up opposition and stop strikes. So, on the one hand, Mussolini was a British agent, on the other hand Britain was paying Mussolini to use propaganda and violence for political ends, practicing techniques he'd later use to gain power and which would influence Hitler.Mussolini Paid by British Spies? originally appeared on About.com European History on Saturday, October 24th, 2009 at

Money fueling battle over gay marriage
With a week and a half to go before Election Day, the two campaigns in the battle over gay marriage continue to haul in large sums of money from donors both inside and outside of Maine. The organization defending Maine's same-sex marriage law continues to hold a sizable financial edge over the law's detractors, although the gap has narrowed in recent weeks. No on 1-Protect Maine Equality has raised more than $4 million so far - including about $1.4 million since Oct. 1 - for its campaign to make Maine the first state in the nation where voters have endorsed same-sex marriages. The group working to repeal Maine's gay marriage law, Stand for Marriage Maine, more than doubled its war chest in three weeks by raising roughly $1.4 million in October. Stand for Marriage Maine has raised a total of $2.6 million, according to reports filed Friday with the Maine Ethics Commission.
