Climate Change Begins at Home: Small Steps to Cut Greenhouse Emissions Can Lead to Big Results
American homes and their energy consumption account for nearly 40 percent of U.S. emissions, 626 million metric tons of carbon in 2005 alone. But 33 simple actions--ranging from improving the insulation to carpooling--could cut those annual carbon emissions by 123 million metric tons. That savings would more than entirely offset emissions from petroleum refineries, iron and steel works, and aluminum smelters combined. [More]

First light! Panels start producing power, but paperwork drags on
Editor's Note: Scientific American 's George Musser will be chronicling his experiences installing solar panels in Solar at Home (formerly 60-Second Solar). Read his introduction here and see all posts here . What a beautiful Indian summer day to inaugurate our solar panels. The electrician finished wiring up the inverter on Saturday and flipped the switch, and I spent much of yesterday running to the basement and checking the inverter readout to confirm that the sun was indeed powering our house. The system isn’t hooked up to the grid yet, but at least we're offsetting some of our domestic power consumption. [More]

Senator Gillibrand LGBT Meet and Greet- binationals ask for UAFA answers.
Today a Binational married lesbian couple (names private) attended Senator Gillibrand's meet and greet at the LGBT Center in NYC. They went armed with a letter setting out their dire circumstances, including reference to the unconscionable detention suffered by one of the spouses. After asking the pertinent question about the passage of Uniting American Families Act (UAFA) and its relationship to comprehensive Immigration reform (CIR) , the Senator spoke specifically of an integrated approach. Privy to this information through my advocacy on behalf of this particular couple I was told- 'Meeting with Sen. Gillibrand was great; she's indeed a great advocate for the LGBT community. She seems a very authentic person, genuine, kind and responsive, sensitive to all matters regarding LGBT issues. The Senator referred to Sen. Schumer who is writing the bill. She also said that CIR and UAFA should be on the table by the end of this year, so it can be passed by spring. She stressed the fact tha

Do Math Puzzles Help You Understand Math?
Martin Gardner turned 95 last week. For more than 50 years, he wrote math puzzles for Scientific American, and he wasn't a math wiz. John Tierney wrote about Gardner last week for The New York Times. When you make something like math fun, it can make learning so much easier. Gardner talks about puzzles that elicit that Aha! moment when everything becomes clear. If you're struggling with math as a non-traditional student earning your GED or a degree, it doesn't matter, pick up a book of math puzzles. It might be just what you need to experience Aha! for yourself. Have you had success using puzzles to understand math?
