Reserves give Mavs big lift in comeback win
By JEFF CAPLAN DALLAS — Rick Carlisle’s mantra has been just find a way to win. On Tuesday night the Dallas Mavericks continued an interesting trend of inverted scoring, relying on a not-long-ago maligned bench, to lift a lagging and injured starting five.Jason Terry, J.J. Barea and Brandon Bass combined for 55 points and together pulled the Mavericks, still without Josh Howard, out of an embarrassing predicament through 3 1/2 quarters against the Los Angeles Clippers.Down by 15 early in the fourth quarter, the three Dallas reserves scored 20 of the Mavs’ 32 final points and were critical during a 9-0 run in the final 3 minutes that gave the Mavs their only lead of the game with 50.2 seconds left for an entirely unorthodox 100-98 victory.Barea started the decisive final burst with a strong baseline drive for a layup. Bass then forced a steal that led to a Terry jumper followed by a Terry drive. Finally, Barea, on the floor until the final buzzer, canned the game-win

There’s no picnic in Pittsburgh for Cowboys on Sunday
GIL LeBRETON In hindsight, there probably was no good month to be playing the Pittsburgh Steelers. Oh, sure, there was always the chance that Ben Roethlisberger would fall off another motorcycle, or maybe all the Steelers receivers would suddenly shoot themselves in a leg. It happens, I’ve read. But, no, the worst road itinerary in the NFL these days is a December trip to Pittsburgh to face the Steelers. On that peat bog surface at Heinz Field, no less, where good running games go to die. This, alas, is the hand that the NFL has dealt the Dallas Cowboys. A December to die for, if they’ll pardon the expression. It begins Sunday in Pittsburgh against a team that may well be the best in the league. The Steelers have the NFL’s No. 1 defense, its most impressive work portfolio to date, and are coming off perhaps the season’s most impressive road victory.Granted, the New England Patriots are missing their lead dog, quarterback Tom Brady. But teams aren’t suppose

Dallas Cowboys, Steelers renew historic rivalry
By RICK HERRIN Pittsburgh and Dallas have staged some of the greatest games in NFL history. For die-hard Cowboys fans, the Steelers have broken some hearts. Lynn Swann’s heroics in Super Bowl X and Jackie Smith’s dropped pass in the end zone in Super Bowl XIII, both losses, dealt the Cowboys some bitter moments. Dallas earned some revenge in Super Bowl XXX when it knocked off Pittsburgh 27-17 for the first time in a championship game.Dallas holds a 15-14 series lead and has won four of the past five meetings. Pittsburgh won at Texas Stadium 24-20 in 2004 in quarterback Ben Roethlisberger’s rookie year. Spotlight on outside linebacker James HarrisonStrengths: Fierce disruptive force with excellent quickness and strength. Plays with a mean streak.
