Another Cowboys season goes by the wayside
By CLARENCE E. HILL JR. PHILADELPHIA — Pathetic. Truly pathetic. What else can be said about a Dallas Cowboys team that laid down in what was a do-or-die game to make the playoffs on the final day of the regular season?A 27-3 halftime deficit becomes a 44-6 blowout defeat by the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday? The Eagles scored 41 consecutive points between the second and third quarters.'We had everything riding on this, and we didn’t step up to the plate,' Cowboys coach Wade Phillips said. 'There’s not much you can say. It was an utter disappointment.'What else can be said about a season that began with a Super Bowl-or-bust mantra that devolved into the most disappointing and underachieving season in franchise history? After bringing 13 Pro Bowlers back from a 13-3 season, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones spent roughly $135 million in signing bonuses and guaranteed money on contract extensions to ensure a Super Bowl run in 2008, only to see his team fail to qualify for the pla

Cowboys improvements likely to come from within next season
By MAC ENGEL PHILADELPHIA — As the Dallas Cowboys’ players filed into the locker room, a fan somehow managed to get near the tunnel entrance and he began to shout this and that as players walked by.When defensive tackle Tank Johnson walked by, he showed just how little he cared when he shouted back, 'Hey, I’m a free agent!'A free agent who likely has played his last game with the Cowboys.Unless owner Jerry Jones changes his mind, which should never be ruled out, dramatic and sweeping changes can’t be expected at Valley Ranch this off-season.With their season ending about one month earlier than expected Sunday after a 44-6 loss against the Philadelphia Eagles, the Cowboys immediately begin the process of trying to improve what appears to be giant, overpriced mess. With so many players locked into long-term contracts, and unless Jones contradicts himself and fires coaches and cuts players, improvements will have to be made in-house. Philadelphia Eagles rout Dallas Cowboys 44-6 to take final playoff spot

R. Johnson, a new Giant, says outlook healthy
With two recent back surgeries behind him, Randy Johnson is refreshed and focused on being a baseball player again this winter - rather than a pitcher limited to rigorous rehabilitation work, his case the past two offseasons. The Big Unit, 45, has been playing catch for three weeks already - and, now, is busy preparing to join his new San Francisco Giants teammates come the start of spring training in February. 'I'm well ahead of schedule than I was the last two offseasons,' Johnson said yesterday during a conference call, one day after he agreed to a one-year, $8 million contract with the Giants. He added that he plans to be on the 2009 Opening Day roster. 'It will be really nice to be in that position this year. ... To some degree I have silenced the critics and shown that I'm healthy.'
