Road teams picked to roll on
Road teams won only 42.8 percent of the 256 NFL games this season — yet all four road teams (all wild cards) in this weekend's playoffs are favored over four division champions. Three of the 2008 wild cards won at least 11 games. Only one of the four division winners hosting games this weekend won as many as 11. This year's wild cards include the NFL's No. 2 defense (Baltimore's), the No. 2 rushing attack (Atlanta's), a two- time MVP (Peyton Manning of Indianapolis) and the NFC's winningest team since 2000 (Philadelphia). Texas Rangers add three pitchers to spring training roster
By JEFF WILSON Derrick Turnbow became an All-Star closer under the watchful eye of Mike Maddux only a few seasons ago, and now the right-hander is seeking to resurrect his career under Maddux’s new team. The Texas Rangers signed Turnbow and two others to minor-league contracts Thursday with invitations to spring training. Terms weren’t disclosed, but a source said Turnbow could make $1.5 million if he makes the big-league roster and meets all contract incentives. He is coming off an injury-shortened 2008 campaign in which he had a 15.63 ERA in 6 1/3 innings — all in April. Turnbow, who saved 39 games in 2005 and was an All-Star in 2006, missed the rest of the season with a slight tear in his rotator cuff that did not require surgery. The addition of Turnbow follows a trend the past two off-seasons. The Rangers have sought quality players coming off injuries who could be had affordably. Eddie Guardado, Milton Bradley and Jason Jennings fell into that category last year.
