Gomez upset with poor first half
The Sports Xchange reports the inconsistent Rangers began play Wednesday tied for the top spot in the Atlantic Division, but they opened the second half of the season with another step backward. A 6-3 loss to Montreal wasn't the optimal way to prove things will be different for the remainder of the regular season, especially after coach Tom Renney and several key Rangers talked in recent days about needing to raise their level of play to maximize playoff positioning. And it starts at the top, at least among their position players. No. 1 center Scott Gomez and No. 1 defenseman (in name only) Wade Redden probably are the two most important skaters the Rangers need to come up big down the stretch. 'I have to be better,' said Gomez, whose first-half production (28 points) was slowed by ankle and groin injuries. 'No excuses. Guys have played with worse. It's kind of lame, but I've always been a second-half player, so in my mind I've gotta create, get it and go.'
