The Texas Rangers have targeted Omar Vizquel among remaining free-agent middle infielders to potentially back up shortstop Elvis Andrus or be at the ready should the 20-year-old struggle in his first shot at being the starting shortstop.Major league sources confirmed Saturday that the Rangers have interest in the 20-year veteran, who is 22 years older than Andrus. Vizquel would be invited to spring training to compete for a chance to be the Rangers’ utility man, a source said.Fort Worth resident German Duran is the top internal candidate for the utility spot, but he is stronger at second base and third base.Vizquel is an 11-time Gold Glove winner at shortstop. He also could serve as a mentor to Andrus, his countryman from Venezuela.That would take a load off the mind of Michael Young, who on Thursday agreed to move from shortstop to third base. While willing to mentor Andrus, Young expressed concern that it would be a difficult responsibility while he has to learn a new position.
