Monarchs a cut above
In the grand tradition of minor-league promotional nights, the Manchester Monarchs, the Kings' American Hockey League affiliate in New Hampshire, will pay tribute to an out-of-style hairdo with 'Rock the Mullet' night March 14. 'The free-flowing, head-banging, hard- rocking of the '10-90' hairdo really came into its own in the 1980s,' Monarchs president Jeff Eisenberg said. 'It is the rock musicians that united hockey hair and music.' Monarchs officials cited the bands Cinderella, Whitesnake, Mötley Crüe, Poison and Guns N' Roses for 'keeping hockey hair cool.' It’s been 20 years since Jerry Jones bought the Dallas Cowboys and fired Tom Landry
By RAY BUCK The enormity of being the man who fired Tom Landry haunted Jerry Jones for a long time. * In some ways, it still does. * But the load was lightened in the spring of ’93 when Jones and Landry held a secret mano a mano at a mutual friend’s house in North Dallas, a meeting that remained under wraps for years. * By then, Jones had owned the Dallas Cowboys for four NFL seasons and already had one Super Bowl title. * Yet, what Jerry was missing was closure with Tom. * You have to know this to appreciate the fallout from Feb. 25, 1989, when Jones, a 46-year-old oil and gas man from Arkansas, bought the Cowboys and lease rights to Texas Stadium from H.R. 'Bum' Bright for $140 million, then immediately replaced an NFL coaching icon with old pal Jimmy Johnson from the college ranks. * There was nothing secret or subtle (or tasteful, some might add) about that day in Cowboys history. * 'If my voice cracks,' Jones told reporters at that Saturday night news conference at Va

Ruck and Maul: Brown all ears as England go solo for 2015 World Cup
They dillied and dallied but England decided to throw their bowler hat (or, under the economic climate, cloth cap) into the ring. South Africa had set the pace by courting the IRB in Cape Town but the English have made a solo bid for the 2015 World Cup. “Rugby is one of the great sports,” said Gordon Brown, who was relieved to talk about something other than financial chaos. The RFU did not find the Prime Minister, recently referred to as a one-eyed Scottish idiot by a two-eyed Englishman with a bison head, blinkered. England went to Downing Street to promote the new Injured Players’ Foundation. Denis Thatcher, as a former rugby ref, would have been at home here, but even more so was Brown, who lost an eye playing the game when he was 16. England sought Government approval of their World Cup bid, without which the £80m down payment would be a bridging loan too far. If the Red Rose prevail, they say they might throw a match or two to Cardiff and Swansea. P.S. Rugb
