Jerry Stackhouse resumes bench role with Dallas Mavericks
By DAVID MOORE SAN ANTONIO — Jerry Stackhouse’s comeback has been put on hold.Stackhouse isn’t satisfied with how his foot has responded since his return from a three-month layoff. He met with Dallas Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle on Monday, and it was decided he would be deactivated for more recovery time.'I’m a little down, but I’m not where I need to be,' said Stackhouse, who did not make the trip to San Antonio for tonight’s game. 'I don’t want to take minutes away from guys who deserve to be out there at this point.'It’s hard, and it put [Carlisle] in a tough position, too. I know he wants to try to get me back, at the same time, where is the balance? We need to win games. Instead of putting myself and my teammates in a bad position, we thought it was best to step back and let me work it out on my own.'Stackhouse opened the season and played until Nov. 14 when the pain from plantar fasciitis and a bone spur in his heel became too gre

Texas Rangers prospect Derek Holland recalls shining moment
By JEFF WILSON  My favorite baseball memory with ... Derek HollandThe game top pitching prospect Derek Holland will never forget wasn’t an outstanding performance on the mound. In fact, he was only so-so pitching for Newark High in Ohio against archrival Lancaster. He blossomed once he was replaced and put in center field, the position that he thought would most likely get him a college scholarship. He made three diving catches in two innings, and then his new left-handed swing finally produced, too.'We were down three. I came up with the bases loaded, had never hit a home run in my life, and I ended up hitting a grand slam,' he said. 'I just started jumping around the bases. I wasn’t even running. I was just out of control.'Young hitting cleanup?Eyes were opened early Monday when the lineups were posted for the Texas Rangers’ first intrasquad game of the spring. Michael Young was batting fourth for the team managed by third-base coach Dave Anderson. The same Youn

Konerko open to a trade if it helps the White Sox
It's not a topic Paul Konerko dwells on -- maybe because, in the back of his mind, he doesn't like how the end game could play out. After earning 10-and-5 status last year -- 10 major-league seasons and at least five with the same club -- Konerko knows that if push comes to shove with the white sox come July, he can at least push back. The 10-and-5 status grants a player the right to veto any trade.

A knee-jerk strategy
Brendan Jones, the last man to qualify for the 64-man Accenture Match Play Championship field this week in Arizona, was home with his family in Australia when he heard Tiger Woods' announcement that he was 'ready to play again' since undergoing season-ending surgery in June. Jones is no math major, but he knew the No. 64 seed plays the No. 1 seed in the opening round, and he knew who was No. 1. 'I got a few chills up the back of my neck,' Jones said. 'Pretty much everybody has said, 'If things don't go your way, just take out his knee.' I hope it doesn't get to that.' The Associated Press; Getty Images file photo

`I`m Australian` best thing to say about Jones` chance vs. Woods
He played only one full season on the PGA Tour and failed to retain his card. He has won eight times the past few years -- in Japan. But he's first up in Tiger Woods' return to competitive golf Wednesday at the Match Play Championship, and Brendan Jones has nothing to lose, Steve Elling says.
