Kris Benson could earn Texas Rangers’ rotation spot
By JEFF WILSON SURPRISE, Ariz. — The starting rotation was penciled in before spring training began last month, and no one has taken an eraser to it with less than a week to go until the Texas Rangers head home for the start of the regular season. The eraser, though, is on the table. Some within the organization are backing Kris Benson, the veteran right-hander who hasn’t thrown a big-league pitch since 2006, to be in the rotation on Opening Day — a move that would send Scott Feldman to the bullpen.Rangers brass was noncommittal Friday before the team’s 28th spring game, but the scenario has been discussed and must be settled before the final roster is due April 5.'We’re going to take the best 12 [pitchers] who give us a chance to win, and that’s that,' general manager Jon Daniels said. 'He [Benson] is in the mix.'Ultimately, the final decision could come down to maintaining depth throughout the organization. The Rangers aren’t expecting a repe

No living in past for `Z`
Carlos Zambrano finished the heavy-lifting part of his spring Friday without a setback or a red flag. But the Cubs' Opening Day starter knows that no matter how strong he looks, his strange and mercurial 2008 season will stalk him until he buries it with success in 2009.

H-O-R-S-E-feathers!
Andy Roddick said he'll likely be unable to accept Dwyane Wade's offer to play H-O-R-S-E. The Miami Heat announced Wade would play Roddick and fellow tennis pro Mardy Fish on the team's practice court Sunday. But a few hours later, Roddick said his next match in the Sony Ericsson Open will be the same day, likely preventing him from taking on Wade. 'I'm kind of mad,' Roddick said Friday night. 'He's like my favorite athlete. So I'm just going to have to pull out — of the tournament.' Roddick was joking: He's certain to show for his next match against Dmitry Tursunov. Cards peaking at right time
It seemed Louisville point forward Terrence Williams, lacking any other obvious motivator midway through Friday's second half, wanted only to test himself. He looked at the future pro standing close enough to smell his chewing gum and figured, what the heck? With Arizona forward Chase Budinger's open palm centimeters from his nose, Williams drilled a three-pointer from the wing. Then, as the scoreboard blinked to reflect Louisville's new 34-point lead, Williams turned to the crowd, grinned and shook his head.
