Scales leads Cubs to rout of Padres
Bobby Scales drove in four runs with two doubles and Ryan Dempster excelled with both his arm and bat as the Chicago Cubs took advantage of 10 walks Thursday for an 11-3 victory over the skidding San Diego Padres. Adrian Gonzalez homered for the fourth consecutive game but couldn't prevent San Diego from losing its 11th straight on the road, its longest skid in 38 years. Since starting the season 10-6, the Padres are 3-16. Dempster (3-2) allowed two runs and three hits over seven innings.

Astros outlast Rockies in slugfest on road
Mike Hampton was back at Coors Field on Wednesday night, and it definitely had a familiar feel for the left-hander. Lance Berkman went 4 for 4 and the Houston Astros finished with 24 hits in a 15-11 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday night. Berkman drove in two runs and scored three times for the Astros, who were one hit shy of their franchise record for a nine-inning game set during the second matchup in a doubleheader against Atlanta on May 30, 1976.

SHEFFIELD GETS BIG HIT IN 8TH,

Braves, Gonzalez hold off Mets in 12th
After blowing a save chance about 19 hours earlier, Mike Gonzalez was determined. 'It happened last night. It wasn't going to happen again today,' the Atlanta Braves reliever said. 'We work too hard.' Gonzalez held on - barely. After allowing Jose Reyes' leadoff double in the 12th inning and Luis Castillo's sacrifice, Gonzalez struck out Carlos Beltran and froze Gary Sheffield with a called third strike, preserving an exhausting 8-7 win over the New York Mets on Wednesday.
