Valverde targeting June 12 return
From The Sports Xchange: RHP Jose Valverde on Wednesday will throw his second bullpen session since landing on the DL on April 27 due to a right calf strain. If all goes well, he envisions being able to be activated from the DL when the Astros visit Arizona from June 12-14. 'It feels good, good, good,' said Valverde, who threw his first bullpen session Monday. He'll field grounders and cover first base Wednesday for the first time since going on the DL. I think on Saturday I'll throw a simulated game and from there I think I'll be able to go pitch in the minor leagues,' he told the Houston Chronicle. 'My arm feels good. I threw a bullpen, and the bullpen was fine. The split-finger was falling real well. I don't have much to worry about. I know I have to work my arm because it was a long time without pitching, just playing catch. But all will be fine.'

Giants RB Ware: Don`t count me out
Newsday reports that Giants third-year running back Danny Ware is excited about the possibility of getting some playing time this year behind starter Brandon Jacobs. Ware didn't know all of the playbook last season, which cost him playing time. This offseason has seen him work one-on-one with running backs coach Jerald Ingram and quarterback Eli Manning, getting the timing and rhythm down on his receiving game. Now Ware is hoping to fill in for Derrick Ward, who left the club for Tampa Bay this offseason. 'As soon as I got in here for the offseason, I got in the books, started meeting with coach Ingram and everything just started clicking,' Ware said. 'I just took time. I knew I couldn't get on the field if I didn't know everything that was going on. I took it upon myself to come in and meet with coach and go out there and catch balls with Eli, and everything's been good ever since.'

Caldwell wants to be counted on
According to the official team Web site, Bengals second-year WR Andre Caldwell is eyeballing the chance to replace T.J. Houshmandzadeh as the slot receiver in the team's offense as well as be a factor on third downs. He's been more comfortable with what he's been doing in practice. The confident receiver says he didn't take care of his body last year, which led to his poor stat totals. This year, however, will be different, according to him. 'I think I fit the T.J. form, but I think I can do more things after I get the ball,' he said. 'I'm a little faster, a little shiftier guy. ... when third down comes, [I want] my number be called. I think I can do that. I also think first and second down I can make plays down the field.'
