Rangers add Sierra Jr. to picks on draft’s 2nd day
By DREW DAVISON ARLINGTON — Having the best farm system in baseball didn’t change the Rangers’ draft plans for this year’s First-Year Player Draft. At least that’s what general manager Jon Daniels said. However, the team did make two bold picks on Day 1, taking Klein left-hander Matthew Purke, who is asking for a $7 million to $7.5 million contract, and independent-league right-hander Tanner Scheppers, who had shoulder surgery last year.On Wednesday, the second day of the draft, the Rangers selected 27 more players, although Daniels said that the stocked farm system again didn’t alter the team’s draft strategy.'There is no one pick that I would attribute to us taking because of the state of our farm system,' Daniels said. 'We felt confident that our philosophy and plan were starting to bear the fruits of our labor and this would’ve been the wrong time to change course. We used a similar type of philosophy this year.'The most notable playe

Phillips hammers toothless Sharks to stake Test claim
Ian McGeechan, the Lions head coach, has done away with the traditional split between weekend and midweek teams, which goes at least some of the way to explaining why the tourists are more impressive under floodlights than under sunlight. Last night they ripped up one of South Africa's more powerful provincial sides with a five-try performance here, staring down the Sharks at their point of strength - a forward pack boasting a sprinkling of full internationals - and opening up after the interval to race away with a fourth victory in as many starts.

Injured Tampa Bay Rays designated hitter Pat Burrell could rejoin the team this weekend and shortstop Jason Bartlett may be back early next week. Burrell, out since May 11 with a neck strain, worked out before Wednesday night's game against the Los Angeles Angels. He will join Single-A Charlotte on Thursday after playing Monday and Tuesday for Double-A Montgomery. Bartlett, placed on the 15-day disabled list May 26 due to a sprained left ankle, ran the bases on Wednesday.
