Cubs-Phillies Preview
The All-Star break certainly didn't slow down the NL East-leading Philadelphia Phillies. They'll attempt to win a ninth straight game for the first time in more than three years Monday night when they open a three-game home series against the surging Chicago Cubs. The Phillies (51-38) entered the All-Star break with five straight wins to conclude a 9-1 homestand, during which they outscored opponents 66-27 while batting .302 with 15 homers.

Rangers don’t want to deplete farm system for pitching
By JEFF WILSON ARLINGTON — The pitcher whose potential availability has sent Texas fans and even some players into a pre-July 31 tizzy has handicapped the chances he will be dealt at 50-50.Acquiring players at the non-waiver trade deadline can be difficult and pricey, but difficult and pricey might be understating the task of trading for former Cy Young winner and All-Star starter Roy Halladay. He’s a difference-maker, with the potential to help a contending team that is missing a rotation piece realize its postseason goal. The Texas Rangers fall into that category. With injuries to two pitchers who opened the year and performed well as starters, adding to the rotation has become their No. 1 deadline goal.'It’s tough to count on guys who aren’t here right now,' general manager Jon Daniels said. 'It’s a challenge. There aren’t many teams that are in the mode of trading now-pieces. It’s very competitive for the few who are out there.'The ideal ad

Cruz day-to-day with fractured finger
By ANTHONY ANDRO ARLINGTON — The struggling Texas offense got some bad news Sunday night when it was revealed that All-Star outfielder Nelson Cruz has a small fracture in his right ring finger.Cruz was originally in the starting lineup, but was a late scratch and replaced by David Murphy. He injured the finger Saturday in the ninth inning as he dived to first on a base hit. An exam Sunday revealed the fracture, which isn’t considered serious. Cruz is listed as day-to-day and could be back in the lineup tonight. If the injury hampers him, its another blow for the offense. He’s been one of the team’s hottest hitters. He has three home runs in his last five starts.Open interestStarter Kevin Millwood was in the minority, but he was pulling for Stewart Cink in the British Open in his playoff against Tom Watson. Millwood used to live in the same Georgia neighborhood as Cink and has played golf with the newest major winner.'I would have been happy if he [Watson] won, bu

Brewers-Pirates Preview
It's been 2 1/2 months since Milwaukee and Pittsburgh last met. The Pirates probably wouldn't mind waiting a bit longer to play again. The Brewers look for their 18th straight victory over Pittsburgh when the NL Central rivals open a three-game series at PNC Park on Monday night. With an 8-5 win over the Pirates (40-51) on May 5, Milwaukee (47-45) extended its winning streak in the series to 17 games.

A Lesson Learned: The 2009 Open Championship
Former New York Yankee great Lou Gehrig once said 'I am the luckiest man on the face of this earth'. Well that is how I feel because I get to write about the lessons I learned about the 2009 Open Championship at Turnberry. I also was privileged to write about the lessons learned from the 2008 Open Championship and coincidentally there were many similar story lines. The Open Championship is larger than any one golfer...even Tiger Woods. Like last year when Tiger was absent due to his surgery this phenomenal Open Championship was contested for the final 36 holes sans Tiger Woods. The Championship didn't bat an eye. Greg Norman was the story that week leading most of the way until Padraig Harrington captured his second Open in as many years -- another phenomenal story.
