Phil Hughes slipped on a sport jacket and grabbed his suitcase. A few lockers down, Derek Jeter checked his phone for last-minute messages. Fresh off their best homestand in five years, the first-place New York Yankees packed up in their plush new clubhouse Sunday and got ready to take this winning show on the road. Jeter hit a go-ahead single, Mariano Rivera earned a four-out save and New York beat the Oakland Athletics 7-5 to complete a 9-1 homestand.

Rangers 7, Royals 2
Dustin Nippert is making a habit of rescuing the Rangers. Nippert allowed one hit in a stellar job of relief pitching, and Texas scored seven times off the Kansas City bullpen in a 7-2 victory over the Royals on Sunday. The unheralded Nippert was forced into action when starter Kevin Millwood left after two innings with tightness in his left gluteus. He gave up a run in the seventh on Alex Gordon's single, the only hit he allowed.

Bad first spoils Porcello`s start
Detroit SP Rick Porcello (9-7) gave up five runs and five hits over 5 1/3 innings on Sunday in a 5-1 loss to the White Sox. Porcello got off to a rough start, loading the bases with two singles and a walk. Jim Thome followed with a fielder's choice to drive in the first run and the second one came on Adam Everett's throwing error on the play. Konerko took advantage of a 3-1 count by sending a pitch 402 feet to left-center, snapping an 0-for-13 slump and putting the White Sox ahead 4-0 with his 19th homer. Porcello needed 31 pitches to get out of the first inning.

Austin Kearns drove in the winning run with a two-out, 10th-inning single, and the Washington Nationals beat the San Diego Padres 3-2 on Sunday. Nyjer Morgan, held out of the starting lineup with a tight left hamstring before entering the game as a pinch hitter in the eighth, led off the decisive rally with a bunt single down the third base line off Greg Burke (2-3). Willie Harris sacrificed Morgan, Nick Johnson was intentionally walked and Ryan Zimmerman flew out.

Nationals 3, Padres 2(10)
Austin Kearns' role has changed, from power-hitting regular to bench player. What's remained constant is his veteran approach to difficult circumstances. Kearns, inserted into the game as a defensive replacement in the ninth inning, drove in the winning run with a two-out, 10th-inning single, and the Washington Nationals beat the San Diego Padres 3-2 on Sunday. 'Austin is such a pro and he gave us a professional at-bat,' said interim manager Jim Riggleman.
