Nationals ship Beimel to Rockies for 2 pitchers
The Colorado Rockies beefed up their injury-riddled bullpen Friday, acquiring left-handed reliever Joe Beimel from the Washington Nationals for two minor league pitchers. Washington also sent cash to the Rockies to pay for part of Beimel's contract. The Nationals received right-handed prospects Ryan Mattheus and Robinson Fabian. It was the second deal the last-place Nationals made Friday. They also sent first baseman Nick Johnson to the Florida Marlins for left-hander Aaron Thompson.

Jets RB Washington not confident about deal
Leon Washington was back on the field for the New York Jets, without a new deal and not optimistic he'll get one before the season begins. 'I don't feel confident that something's going to get done,' the unhappy running back said after the team's late practice Friday. 'It kind of hurts me a little bit because I've been here three years and busted my tail off and played hard for the organization. 'For me not to get rewarded ... I'm unhappy about that.

Five views of Dallas Cowboys backup quarterback Jon Kitna
BY CHAREAN WILLIAMS Five views of backup quarterback Jon KitnaThe Detroit Lions traded Jon Kitna, who turns 37 in September, to the Dallas Cowboys for cornerback Anthony Henry. Kitna started only four games last season in Detroit, ending on injured reserve with a back injury. 1Kitna hasn’t entered a season as a backup since 2005 when Carson Palmer took over in Cincinnati. But barring an injury to Tony Romo, Kitna will begin 2009 as the No. 2 quarterback.2 Kitna got a chance in the NFL only because Seahawks coach Dennis Erickson went to see his nephew, Jamie Christian, play at Central Washington. Erickson liked what he saw from the quarterback. Kitna, who, at the time, was finishing his student teaching, readying to become a high school math teacher, signed as an undrafted free agent.3 In Kitna’s first 12 seasons, he played with three teams. Those teams were 76-118 with him on the roster. Only twice, with the Seahawks in 1999 and with the Bengals in 2005, has Kitna played o

Marlins get first baseman Nick Johnson from Nats
When Florida Marlins slugger Hanley Ramirez learned only minutes before the trade deadline that the team had added a hitter, he threw a fist, grinned and shouted, 'Yeehaw!' It's fair to say Nick Johnson will be warmly received by his new teammates. Florida acquired the first baseman and cash from the last-place Washington Nationals for a pitching prospect, left-hander Aaron Thompson. The deal was completed minutes before Friday's 4 p.m. EDT deadline for making trades without waivers.

A day late and a year older, first-round draft pick Brian Orakpo went to work for the Washington Redskins. The No. 13 overall selection from Texas was expected at practice Friday after agreeing to terms Thursday night. The deal ends a one-day holdout - Orakpo was the only player absent when training camp opened on Thursday - and puts the 6-foot-4, 260-pound linebacker on the field in time for his 23rd birthday.

Jets RB Washington reports for camp
New York Jets running back Leon Washington has reported to the team and was on the field for the first practice of training camp. Washington was a no-show when the rest of the team checked into the players' dormitory Thursday because of a contract dispute in which he's seeking a big raise. A Pro Bowl selection last season as a kick returner, Washington took part in drills at the start of Friday's first practice. It wasn't immediately known if a deal was reached between the Jets and Washington.
