Cruz’s sprained ankle puts Texas Rangers in a bind By JEFF WILSON OAKLAND, Calif. — Nelson Cruz spent much of his time Tuesday afternoon receiving treatment on his sprained left ankle and in a spirited card game with some of his Texas Rangers teammates. But the right fielder didn’t spend any time on the disabled list, even though his ankle was still swollen underneath a heavy, tight tape job by the training staff. The plan is to keep Cruz off the DL. The Rangers are already without second baseman Ian Kinsler until at least Aug. 13, and to lose Cruz until Aug. 18 would leave them without their two most powerful right-handed bats. So, the Rangers will risk playing with essentially a one-man bench and a lineup heavy with left-handed bats for now, and hope Cruz can return for the weekend series against first-place Los Angeles.'He came in better today,' manager Ron Washington said. 'So, we’re going to go day by day and see what happens.'The lineup Washington put together Tuesday night at McAfee Coliseum bunched together thre Star TelegramPirates Continue Homestand With Opener Vs. Stafford is in a battle with Daunte Culpepper for the top gig and the two are rotating series in practice. 'I don't feel like I'm coaching or talking to a rookie when we work with him,' Linehan said Tuesday. 'I know you hear of that - and it's not just talking, saying that's how it is because he was the No. 1 pick and all that stuff. He has a very natural feel for the game and understands concepts, he can translate things he's done before to what he is doing now without a lot of repetition. He can go right to it and make that decision and make that transformation. (He's) pretty impressive that way.' CBS News1 2 3 4 5 |
