Injured WR Stanback returns ready to battle for roster spot
BY JEFF CAPLAN SAN ANTONIO — Injury-riddled wide receiver Isaiah Stanback returned to practice Friday after missing most of the first week of the Dallas Cowboys’ camp with a knee injury. The question is, is it too late?'I don’t look at it that way,' Stanback said. 'I need to get the reps I’ve missed out on. It hasn’t even been a week, but when it’s two-a-days, it feels like it’s a long time.'Entering his third season out of Washington, Stanback is battling to make the 53-man roster. Getting back on the field is at least a good start for the former quarterback who Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones believed could become the next Hines Ward or Antwaan Randle El — or Patrick Crayton. It’s possible the Cowboys might choose to keep four receivers with Sam Hurd and Miles Austin well ahead of Stanback. Even if they go with five, rookie Kevin Ogletree — wearing No. 81 — is having a solid camp.Coach Wade Phillips said

Rangers` hitting unlikely to improve
Jeff Wilson The rage these days in jock-talk is a five-word phrase that often makes sense only to those who are reciting it and seems to be used as an answer to a question that a player or coach would rather not answer.Reporters and columnists have come to accept 'it is what it is' as what it is, but it actually is a dead-on description at this point of the season for the Texas Rangers’ struggling offense.Entering the series finale at Oakland, it was the worst-hitting offense in the American League since the All-Star break and only fractionally above the AL basement for the entire season. It is what it is, and there’s not much to do about it now.'All I hear people asking me is, 'Can we take more pitches? Can we start working the count?’ ' manager Ron Washington said. 'That’s not something that happens just by talking. We have to have the personnel. And it’s not going to happen at this time of the year.'At this time of the year, if you’re not in

Terence Newman focused, feeling great
By CLARENCE E. HILL JR. SAN ANTONIO — Edgy and feisty, Dallas Cowboys cornerback Terence Newman looks the part of a seven-year veteran who will turn 31 in September. He put a shoulder into Martellus Bennett the other day that has the massive tight end looking for payback. He picks and chooses when he wants to be bothered by the throng of media after practice. And he has no problem challenging questions he doesn’t like.Simply put, Newman has been through it all since being drafted fifth overall in 2003.He’s tired of the minutia that comes along with the circus that surrounds America’s team, especially as it relates to his team’s frustrating performances. But don’t mistake Newman’s attitude for a waning spirit.Newman’s chippiness is rooted in the fact that he is as healthy as he has been in years and his expectations for himself and the Cowboys are higher than ever.'Hello world,' he smiled broadly, when asked if he was expecting a big season
