L.T. lines up in Wildcat
The San Diego Chargers spent part of Tuesday's practice working on the Wildcat offense -- mostly to help their defense get used to facing the trendy formation. The Chargers have experimented with the run-centric formation before, but never used it in a game. The Chargers had LaDainian Tomlinson behind center, with wide receiver Legedu Naanee -- who played quarterback in high school and a bit at Boise State -- on his flank. The team implemented several variations within the Wildcat, including passes and deceptive rushing. 'I'm not as concerned about how we handle it offensively as how we deal with it from a defensive prospective,' coach Norv Turner said. Turner would prefer to have quarterback Philip Rivers and tight end Antonio Gates in their usual positions. 'When we go to the Wildcat, we put the guy who led the league in touchdowns and quarterback rating out about five yards from me on the sideline and Gates at tackle. That should tell you how excited I am using about the wildcat,' T

Colts` Irsay hopes S Sanders plays in season-opener
Colts owner Jim Irsay is hoping safety Bob Sanders will be back in time for the season-opener. Sanders has not practiced at training camp after having offseason surgery to clean up his right knee. On Tuesday, Irsay made an impromptu visit to the team's temporary headquarters and said Sanders, the 2007 NFL defensive player of the year, needed to get ready before he participated in practice.

Texas Rangers rival the Dallas Cowboys for buzz-worthiness
DAVID THOMAS We’re rolling into our third week of Dallas Cowboys training camp and the preseason opener is a day away, so let’s talk ... Texas Rangers? The dispatches continue to pour in from San Antonio, and everything there seems so quiet. So free of controversy. So football-y.If not for the free entertainment of Marty B, Camp Cowboys might actually be — and did you ever think you’d hear this word associated with P.T. Jones’ team? — boring. The big news coming out of training camp is about position battles and injuries. Times are tough for media companies, and it’s difficult these days to justify travel expenses for real football news.Talking about a player with a bad attitude being cut from the team because of locker room chemistry? That’s the Rangers, not the Cowboys.Talking about an off-field distraction surrounding the team’s biggest name? That’s the Rangers, not the Cowboys.Lighting up the phone lines and pushing th

Omar Vizquel still treated like a hero in Cleveland
Omar Vizquel hasn’t played for the Cleveland Indians since 2004, but you could hardly tell it Tuesday.Vizquel, who won eight Gold Gloves and played on six playoff teams with the Indians, was the star attraction. He found that out Monday when he spent the off day catching up with friends.'I’m walking down the street and I get surprised about how people still call my name and recognize me and start talking about the old teams,' said Vizquel, who started at second base for the Texas Rangers on Tuesday. 'You feel nostalgic a little bit. I thought they would forget after a while. I was kind of surprised.'The series marks the second time Vizquel has played in Cleveland since he signed with San Francisco after the 2004 season. The Giants played three games in Cleveland, and he was greeted by a standing ovation in each at-bat of the series. While he’s now been back a couple of times, it’s still special for him to play in the city where his career took off. Something to see off the field at Cowboys Stadium: Contemporary art
By SUSAN SCHROCK ARLINGTON — What do beer, nachos and contemporary art have in common? They are three things fans can enjoy at Cowboys Stadium concession stands. The $1.15 billion stadium is expected to feature at least 14 contemporary art pieces, from dramatic metal sculptures suspended over the entryways to vibrant, abstract paintings over the stairways, pedestrian ramps and concession stands. The artwork, commissioned and paid for by Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and his wife, Gene, is expected to be complete when the team plays its first regular-season home game Sept. 20 against the New York Giants.'At the beginning of the project, we knew we wanted more than just a stadium. We wanted something for all walks of life,' Gene Jones said Tuesday during a press tour of the works in progress. 'We felt like this grand stadium, with its great architecture, needed a great art collection.'The works, designed for specific areas of the stadium, capture the spirit of the game or complem

Dallas Cowboys focus on NBF (Nothing But Football)
RANDY GALLOWAY SAN ANTONIO — A strange August. One of our local jocks, it seems, was doing body shots, and it’s all over the national news. Except his name wasn’t DeMarcus Ware, or the very tough and talented Jay Ratliff, and a running back wasn’t paying the price during a scrimmage here at Cowboys’ training camp.Who knew, huh, there was another kind of body shot? Then there was also the case last week where another of our local jocks suddenly found himself on the kicked-off-the-team street, told straight-up to get going elsewhere, even though he was a pitcher who had a winning record. Recent history tells us the Cowboys have done this kind of stuff (remember Quincy Carter that summer in Oxnard?), but no, this time it didn’t happen down in San Antone. Here in August, the Rangers of the baseball world have become what the Cowboys have been forever in the football world. Controversy flowing. Distractions galore. It’s a newsy team, but also a winnin

Release caught Vicente Padilla by surprise
In his first interview since being released by the Texas Rangers, pitcher Vicente Padilla said he can’t figure out general manager Jon Daniels and was surprised by the move. The right-hander from Nicaragua was also surprised about being portrayed as a bad teammate by management and some players. 'I did not expect this,' Padilla said by phone from Miami. 'But really it’s normal for these people to think crazy stuff. I think there’s a chance to be called by another team ... or even the same team. I have no problem with that. I’m a professional ball player who lives off of this.'The Rangers have until today to negotiate with Padilla, release him or send him to the minors, but Daniels said there’s no chance Padilla will return to the team. Daniels said the move stems from Padilla not being a good teammate or role model for young players and from his lack of a positive attitude in the locker room.'We had analyzed this since before the trade deadline [of Jul
