Bucs QB competition extended another week No more deadlines on choosing Tampa Bay's starting quarterback. Byron Leftwich and Luke McCown will get another chance to prove who's the best choice to lead the Buccaneers into the regular season. First-year coach Raheem Morris said Monday the race is too close to call and dropped a self-imposed mandate to determine who's No. 1 before the third preseason game. Leftwich and McCown each will play a little more than a quarter Thursday night against Miami. FOX SportsJackson impresses in Vikings backup QB competition In two short days last week, quarterback Tarvaris Jackson went from competing for a leading role in the Minnesota Vikings' offense to fighting for a roster spot as an understudy to Brett Favre. When the Favre theatrics closed after two series of the exhibition game against Kansas City on Friday night, Jackson delivered a nearly perfect performance in relief as he tries to assert himself as the man for the job. Jackson completed 12 of 15 passes for 202 yards and two touchdowns. FOX SportsMangini says Browns QB competition still close Three weeks into training camp and through two exhibition games, Eric Mangini isn't ready to end Cleveland's neck-and-neck quarterback derby. The first-year Browns coach conceded Monday that the competition between Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson remains as tight as when it began. 'It's very close,' Mangini said. Mangini said he's confident a clear winner will emerge in the next two weeks, but if one doesn't, he will decide on his starter for the Sept. Arizona Daily StarStrasburg headed for fall ball From The Sports Xchange: Stephen Strasburg did two days of the press junket like a true Capitol Hill insider, handling all the interviews and autograph signings with utter calm. But that is probably the last fans will see of him for a while. The No. 1 overall pick's fleeting appearance in Washington is over, and it is now time for Strasburg to get to work. He heads to the team's spring training complex in Viera, Fla., at the end of this week to begin a throwing program the Nationals will use to assess where he is physically after a 10-week-break from competition. Then, Strasburg will take part in the team's instructional league before pitching in the Arizona Fall League. He stands a chance to make the Nationals' rotation out of spring training next year -- it is hard to imagine Washington compiling a rotation of five pitchers more talented than the San Diego State product -- but that would mean Strasburg had made his major-league debut without ever throwing a pitch in the minors.
