Braves-Astros Preview
In the midst of their longest losing streak since April, Atlanta Braves manager Bobby Cox acknowledged his team will likely have to win every game on this road trip to stay in serious contention for the NL wild card. That's easier said than done. The Braves look to avoid losing a season-worst six straight games Tuesday night when they open a three-game series against the red-hot Houston Astros, who are coming off a four-game sweep of the defending World Series champions.

Twins-Blue Jays Preview
Joe Mauer is making a case for AL MVP while also doing his part to improve the Minnesota Twins' chances in the Central race. A visit to the Toronto Blue Jays appears to be helping. The catcher will try to continue his red-hot hitting Tuesday night when the Twins and Blue Jays play the second of this four-game series. Mauer leads the majors with a career-high .369 batting average after missing the opening month while recovering from offseason kidney surgery.

Andruw Jones coming off disabled list
By JEFF WILSON CLEVELAND — Two All-Star starters this year are missing from the Texas Rangers’ offense, so a former All-Star will get a chance to add some punch to the lineup.Andruw Jones, a five-time All-Star, will be activated from the disabled list tonight and jump right into the mix as the designated hitter against Cleveland left-hander Aaron Laffey. The Rangers knew they would be without Michael Young (pulled left hamstring) this series, and manager Ron Washington confirmed that Josh Hamilton won’t be coming to Cleveland. The center fielder had a second root-nerve injection Monday, but the procedure usually requires 24 to 48 hours for the cortisone to calm the nerve. The latest plan calls for Hamilton to join the club Friday for the start of a nine-game homestand.Jones will get a chance to jump-start a lineup that entered Monday on a 15-inning scoreless streak.'It would definitely help if he’ll catch fire down the stretch,' Washington said. New rules for sports charters hits Blue Jays
A rules change concerning charter airlines carrying sports teams in foreign countries is causing problems for the Toronto Blue Jays. The Blue Jays begin a four-game series in Detroit on Friday and had intended to fly to Windsor, Ontario, before crossing the border by bus. 'Logistically, it's a little easier for us,' traveling secretary Mike Shaw said. 'We have no issue flying to Detroit, we just thought it would be a little easier flying to Windsor.

Epitome of futility
As bad as the Cubs and their fans might think they have it, it could be worse. Just look at the Pittsburgh Pirates, baseball's new standard bearers for embarrassing futility, thanks to the Cubs' 4-2 victory Monday in the series opener at PNC Park.

Royals 6, Angels 3
Billy Butler's inadvertent homer helped the Kansas City Royals end a frustrating losing streak against a team they never can seem to beat. Butler homered twice and had four RBIs, and the Royals ended a nine-game losing streak to the Los Angeles Angels with a 6-3 win on Monday. Struggling with his timing before last week's Oakland series, Butler made a few adjustments during the four-game set against the Angels.

Hamilton has 2nd shot, out until weekend
Rangers slugger Josh Hamilton has received a second shot for the pinched nerve in his back. He is not expected to return until at least next weekend. Hamilton is back in Texas, where he had another injection Monday while Texas opened a three-game series in Cleveland. 'He got his shot,' Rangers manager Ron Washington said in Cleveland. 'It supposedly went well and he's resting well. They say it will be 24 or 48 hours before we know if it takes.

Pence lifts Astros to four-game sweep of Phillies
Hunter Pence heads straight to the weight room after most games. Makes sense, because he provided the muscle in the Houston Astros' four-game sweep of Philadelphia. Pence homered and drove in three runs on Monday in the Astros' 4-3 win over the NL East leaders. The Houston right fielder went 6 for 13 in the series with three home runs and eight RBIs. 'Not too long ago, I was in the biggest slump,' he said. 'Now, I've caught a good streak and I'm hitting the ball well.

Cubs-Pirates Preview
Expected to contend for the World Series, this season has been a disappointment for the Chicago Cubs. The Pittsburgh Pirates are no strangers to disappointing seasons. Assured of a record-breaking 17th consecutive losing season, the Pirates try for a rare win against the Cubs when they meet Tuesday night at PNC Park. With Monday's 4-2 loss to Chicago, Pittsburgh (54-82) will finish below .500 - just as it has every season since 1993.
