Pads keep Rockies from gaining ground in West
Despite dropping two of three games to San Diego, the Colorado Rockies like their position in the National League playoff chase. Tony Gwynn drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly in a three-run sixth inning and the Padres beat the wild card-leading Rockies 7-3 Sunday. The Rockies open a three-game series in San Francisco on Monday against the Giants, who pulled to 4 1/2 games back in the wild-card race after beating the Dodgers.

Hunter gets down to business, beats M`s
Rangers rookie Tommy Hunter had fun during a long rain delay. Then he got down to business. Hunter threw a six-hitter for his first complete game and the Rangers hit three homers to beat the Seattle Mariners 7-2 in the opener of a doubleheader Sunday. Rain that pelted the area for the past four days caused the game to begin 4 hours, 31 minutes after the originally scheduled start time of 12:35 p.m. It was a makeup of Friday night's rainout. Hunter arrived at the ballpark at 8:45 a.m.

Joe Namath took Sanchez aside just minutes before pregame warmups.

Lester dominates as BoSox sweep Rays
Jon Lester made the most of his second chance. Two days after struggling in a game that was rained out, the Red Sox left-hander allowed two hits in eight innings and Boston beat Tampa Bay 4-0 on Sunday for a doubleheader sweep, handing the AL champion Rays their 11th consecutive loss. Lester gave up hits to three of the first four batters Friday night but none of that counted when the game was called after he threw only 23 pitches. It was made up as the opener Sunday, a 3-1 Boston win.
