Birk donates brain for safety of future linemen Harvard graduate Matt Birk has pledged to donate his brain and spinal cord tissues after death to a Boston University medical school program that studies sports brain injuries. The Baltimore Ravens center, in his 12th NFL season, has sustained three concussions and been jarred senseless on several occasions. 'What will they find? Not much,' Birk joked Wednesday. 'Maybe because it's the brain and spinal cord it's a little bit morbid, but I just kind of look at it as being an organ donor. FOX SportsSaints-Eagles Preview Michael Vick is suspended until Week 3 and newly acquired Jeff Garcia isn't ready to step into the starting lineup. With Donovan McNabb's status for Sunday's home opener against the New Orleans Saints in question, a Philadelphia Eagles team with three former Pro Bowl quarterbacks on its roster might have to give third-year signal-caller Kevin Kolb his first NFL start. FOX SportsCardinals-Jaguars Preview Led by Kurt Warner and his bevy of big-play wide receivers, the Arizona Cardinals boasted one of the most feared offenses in the NFL last season. That offense wasn't much of a threat in the 2009 opener. Warner and the Cardinals look to get on track Sunday when they visit the Jacksonville Jaguars, also coming off a disappointing offensive showing in their first game. FOX SportsProving popular: Favre jerseys move fast; Vick too For all of the negative publicity produced by Brett Favre's latest retirement flip-flop, fans have flocked to watch him in action - and buy his memorabilia. Over just a 10-day span following his arrival in Minnesota, Favre's No. 4 Vikings jersey - still a strange sight - was the top seller on the NFL's merchandise Web site for the entire sales period from April 1-Aug. 28. It costs $80. Newness always helps: Jay Cutler ranked second and Michael Vick was fourth during that timeframe. FOX Sports49ers / Ground game is a re-run Now that the 49ers have trotted out their vaunted power running game at 30.2 inches a crack, the rest of the NFL is on notice: Go ahead and put eight and even nine men near the line of scrimmage in the imaginary box, we're still going to run it at you, come... SF GateNFL Quarterback Power Rankings Were Kyle Orton and Brodie Croyle one of the top five quarterbacks in the league last weekend? That's what the NFL passer rating system says. But Scout.com's Ed Thompson has developed his own rating system that puts the emphasis on the performance factors that impact the team's success. FOX Sports49ers` Haralson deserved his bonus Parys Haralson can't remember exactly how he learned that the NFL had slipped him a bonus of $241,000, more than half his 2008 salary, in March as a reward for contributing well above his pay grade. 'I forget, think I just saw the check stub,' he said. 'It... SF GateRaiders rookie says he did his job Raiders rookie Darrius Heyward-Bey doesn't get all the browbeaten concern over his total lack of stats after one NFL start. Sure, he dropped the first two throws his way and caught nothing Monday night against the Chargers. Yes, his coach said afterward he... SF GateBrett Favre partly to blame for fine The NFL fined the Jets $75,000 and Mike Tannenbaum $25,000 for not listing Brett Favre on the injury report late last season with an arm ailment. The reason this issue came up is because Favre brought it up last week. If he hadn't, it would have been a dead issue. But Favre has the gift of gab. Is Anderson now going to investigate the myriad of similar situations with other teams last year? FOX SportsJets, ex-coach fined $125,000 for hiding Favre`s injury The NFL assessed $125,000 in fines to the New York Jets and former coach Eric Mangini on Wednesday for violating the league's rules on injury reporting with former quarterback Brett Favre last season.
