Cowboys move up RB Washington from practice squad
Needing another running back, the Dallas Cowboys moved Chauncey Washington up to the 53-man roster on Saturday and are likely to have him active Sunday against the Denver Broncos. The Cowboys released safety Marvin White to make room for him. White had been contributing on special teams, but Washington can do that, too. He played for Cowboys special teams coach Joe DeCamillis in Jacksonville last season. Washington also is expected to be the No.

Scouting the Broncos
Dominating defense Mike Nolan was hired to change the defense from a 4-3 scheme to a 3-4. So far it looks like a masterful move. The Broncos have allowed one touchdown and 16 total points, a remarkable stat no matter the competition. Denver leads the league in total defense (214.7 yards per game), essentially going from worst last season to first.Newcomers rise Most impressive are the new players the Broncos brought in to play in the defensive scheme. Ronnie Fields, a backup nose tackle in San Francisco, is anchoring the line. Veteran newcomers — linebacker Andra Davis, cornerback Andre Goodman and safeties Brian Dawkins and Renaldo Hill — have significantly outperformed the players they replaced. Under control Kyle Orton is no Jay Cutler, but he has the Broncos 3-0 and the same zero in the loss column is also in his interception column. Orton, 6-1 in his past seven starts dating back to last season with Chicago, simply doesn’t make many mistakes. He has not thrown an

Players to watch in today’s Cowboys-Broncos game
WR Brandon Marshall He’s petulant, immature, unpredictable and very, very good. He’s demanded a trade and a new contract. The Broncos suspended him for 10 days at the end of the August for a series of 'incidents detrimental to the team.' But he’s still in Denver and he still leads the team in receiving (12 catches for 128 yards and a touchdown). RB Knowshon Moreno The rookie runner from Georgia is off to a terrific start, showing to be a tougher-than-expected inside runner with 184 yards on 46 carries. He’s combined with starter Correll Buckhalter (31-230) to form the league’s fourth-best rushing attack (158.7). He also has one of the more interesting first names. It’s a combination of his father’s nickname (Knowledge) and his mother’s name (Varashon). Now you know.LB DeMarcus Ware For last season’s sack leader to get his first of the season, he’ll have to do it against a player who has not given up a full sack in his 19-game

Five things to watch: Cowboys at Broncos
BY JEFF CAPLAN Power vs. power1The Cowboys and Broncos are combining for 352.4 rushing yards a game. That’s a major change for both clubs. Denver finished 2008 ranked 12th in the league in rushing and the Cowboys were 21st. The Broncos are getting a boost from the league’s top rookie runner, Knowshon Moreno, behind Correll Buckhalter. Dallas will be without breakaway back Felix Jones (knee) and his 10.1-yards-per-carry average. Marion Barber (quadriceps) is expected to start, but he likely won’t be 100 percent. That could put the onus on third back Tashard Choice, who was up to the task against Carolina.Young and in charge2Wade Phillips was 46 years old when he succeeded Dan Reeves as head coach in Denver. Phillips went 16-16 in two seasons and was canned. New Broncos coach Josh McDaniels is only 33 years old as he succeeds Phillips’ successor, Mike Shanahan. McDaniels has overcome one of the more inauspicious starts in league history and somehow has his team b

There are the Raiders, ranked No. 28 in rushing defense, giving up 155 yards per game through three games.
