David Flatman: Ignoring risk of injury is all in the mindset
Over the years, I have been unlucky enough to stumble across various directors of rugby who, for some reason known only to themselves, think it is a worthy idea to visit a Royal Marines training camp before the start of the season. These weeks are generally beyond hard and tend to leave the average player physically exhausted, malnourished and mentally drained. The coaches see it as some sort of bonding experience, visiting the very edge of our bodies' limits together, as brothers.

Astros-Mets Preview
Health issues virtually derailed any chance the New York Mets had at making the postseason. They can't even escape injury concerns going into the last game of the season. It's unclear if Carlos Beltran and David Wright, two Mets stars who have managed to come back for the stretch run, will be available to play for a team set to close out a hugely disappointing year Sunday against the Houston Astros.

Shoulder injury ends season for Browns RB Davis
Browns rookie running back James Davis had a short run in his first NFL season. Davis, whose impressive exhibition season led to speculation about Jamal Lewis' future in Cleveland, will miss the rest of the season with a shoulder injury. The Browns placed him on injured reserve Saturday. Davis got hurt in the Browns' season opener against Minnesota on a hit by Vikings cornerback Antoine Winfield.

Mark Reynolds valuable even with record strikeouts
Arizona Diamondbacks wise to leave him alone Historically this is Sit Down Weekend in the major leagues. Voters will have a tough time deciding on baseball’s postseason honors
ANTHONY ANDRO Today wraps up the regular season. Members of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America have a couple of days to turn in their awards ballots. I’m not going to wait that long. It’s time to unveil who I think should get the awards.AL MVPC Joe Mauer, Minnesota: Forget that the catcher missed the first month of the season. He leads the league in batting average, and kept the Twins in the playoff hunt until the final week of the season. He did that without the help of Justin Morneau, whose season ended early with an injury. Mauer led the league in slugging percentage and on-base percentage and, despite the April absence, he was in the top 10 in total bases and set career highs in homers and RBI.AL Cy YoungRHP Zack Greinke, Kansas City: His detractors complain that Greinke didn’t win enough games. How can anyone expect to get more than 16 wins while pitching for the Royals? He deserves a medal as well as the award. He was the runaway leader in ERA a
