Cowboys coach Wade Phillips may have to rethink no-tackle practices
By JEFF CAPLAN  IRVING — Dallas Cowboys coach Wade Phillips follows a philosophy of no-tackle practices to avoid injuries.Defensive players concentrate on technique and reading angles to get in position to make the tackle without wrapping up their teammates.'No, it’s not easy,' cornerback Orlando Scandrick said of going from non-tackling practices to the physicality of a game. 'But, it’s just something we’ve got to get better at.'Phillips is hardly the only coach to prohibit hitting, but continued poor tackling, particularly in the secondary, is calling that tactic into question. The latest example was Denver receiver Brandon Marshall’s 51-yard, zig-zagging scamper into the end zone.'I think a lot of people underestimate how hard open-field tackling is,' said Scandrick, who had his own tackling issues in the New York Giants loss, 'and how good some of these receivers are.'Biggest signThe Cowboys rank 26th in total defense, 29th in pass defense and 1

Missed Opportunities
IRVING, Tex. - The Dallas Cowboys’ locker room was a ghost town Monday. Fewer than a dozen players made themselves available to the media, and those who did found themselves answering questions about what went wrong in the team’s loss Sunday to the Denver Broncos.

Patriots are looking more coordinated on offense
With Tom Brady coming back from knee surgery and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels heading to Denver to become the Broncos’ head coach, there figured to be some questions concerning the Patriots’ offense, or at least a period of adjustment before this year’s unit could establish an identity.

Washington back on practice squad
The Dallas Cowboys signed RB Chauncey Washington back to their practice squad Tuesday. He was signed to the active roster October 3 from the practice squad and played on special teams at Denver, making one tackle prior to his release on October 5.

Can we call it a contact sport?
There is a deep and strong friendship, so the lines of communication are always open. But good luck finding out if Patriots coach Bill Belichick and Broncos coach Josh McDaniels have been chatting each other up this week in anticipation of Sunday’s game in Denver.

Surprising Broncos

Rockies have SP questions post-Game 1
Jorge De La Rosa's groun injury left the Rockies' rotation in limbo. Manager Jim Tracy is committing only to young ace Ubaldo Jimenez, with his darting 100 mph fastball, starting Game 1 on Wednesday at Citizens Bank Park. Aaron Cook, who has yielded one run in 13 innings since returning from a sore shoulder that sidelined him for more than a month, will likely get the nod for Game 2 on Thursday, with Jason Hammel or Jason Marquis starting Game 3 in Denver if De La Rosa can't.

Playoff weather
THE PHILLIES' equipment managers better pack some heavy jackets and gloves this weekend. When the National League Division series switches to Denver's Coors Field for Game 3 on Saturday night, temperatures are expected to fall into the 30s during the game with possible snow showers, according to Fox 29 meteorologist John Bolaris.

The most basic throw is suddenly beyond Romo’s range
Randy Galloway The big debate around here last week:Let Romo be Romo, or not?The big debate this week?Should Romo even be starting?I’m serious. And no, I’m not a Jon Kitna next-of-kin.OK, a quarterback change won’t happen. Maybe it shouldn’t happen. But after what was observed Sunday in Denver, there’s something else that shouldn’t be happening, at least not to a QB who has reached the veteran level in the NFL, and done so with an immense amount of fanfare, overblown or not.Actually, all previous concerns about Tony have quickly become yesterday’s cat box liner. Right here, right now, it’s not about letting the man go hully gully, and be allowed to Freebird his way through the weekly rigors of life in the NFL.That thing Sunday came down to one very disturbing fact:In crutch and clutch time, Tony failed repeatedly to deliver a basic throw to an open receiver. So, as many have declared, the Cowboys’ wideouts are void of big-play poten
