Correct call for Cowboys fans is to take Jason Garrett to woodshed
RANDY GALLOWAY As far as fan, media and talk-show abuse this week, Tony Romo has been taser-gunned, water-boarded and caned. That’ll teach him not to screw up.Then again, the quarterback is always the logical target around here when things don’t go well for the Cowboys, meaning all this Romo bashing is merely a healthy frustration release that saves the family dog from hearing an undeserved earful.Meanwhile, in the aftermath of Denver deep doo-doo, there’s been a more interesting development.Wade Phillips skates for a week. While not exactly given a free ride, kicking around Wade isn’t the usual top coaching priority.Jason Garrett, come on down.Last week, the biggest knock on the Broncos was they hadn’t played anybody. This week, the biggest knock on the still-unbeaten Broncos is they haven’t played anybody.Excuse that old football joke, but the Garrett offense was so inept for the last three quarters in Denver, it certainly didn’t appear the B

No one was confused, Romo tells KC media
By JEFF CAPLANand CHAREAN WILLIAMS IRVING — Tony Romo was hoping for a fifth down. That’s what he told Kansas City reporters in a conference call Wednesday. The Dallas Cowboys’ quarterback, who hasn’t talked to the area media since Sunday, has had his command questioned since video surfaced of him holding up three fingers to game officials after the final fourth-down play against Denver. The Cowboys explained KDFW/Channel 4’s video in a release Tuesday, saying the down marker read '3' as Romo began walking off the field.'I think that story already was set straight,' Romo told Kansas City reporters when asked about the situation. 'I think someone just kind of took something and ran with it. It was fourth down, and everyone knew it was fourth down. We called it in the huddle. The play call we had was our fourth-down play. I told the guys, 'Last play.’ But as you’re walking off the field, the guys moving the down marker goes to 3. I thought maybe

Bailey relishes increase in passes coming his way
The bully on the corner for so long, Champ Bailey is now the one getting picked on. Maybe it's his advancing age - 31 - or that he's coming off a groin injury that cost him half of last season and ended his Pro Bowl streak at eight. Whatever the reason, the Denver Broncos cornerback has seen his workload increase this season as opposing quarterbacks go after him. All Bailey can say is, well, thanks. 'That only gives me chances to make plays,' Bailey said with a smile Wednesday.

Can we call it a contact sport?
There is a deep and strong friendship, so the lines of communication are always open. But good luck finding out if Patriots coach Bill Belichick and Broncos coach Josh McDaniels have been chatting each other up this week in anticipation of Sunday’s game in Denver.

Brady faces former coordinator for first time
Josh McDaniels spent two seasons working with the New England defense so he knew what he was up against when he became the Patriots quarterbacks coach in 2004. Now, as head coach of the Broncos, he should have a good idea of what he'll face when Denver hosts Tom Brady and the Patriots on Sunday. McDaniels spent the last three seasons as the Patriots offensive coordinator. But for Brady, knowing what to expect doesn't always lead to success.

Injured Broncos tailback misses practice
The Denver Broncos might be without their most productive running back when they face the New England Patriots this weekend. Correll Buckhalter, who sprained his left ankle against Dallas on Sunday and left the stadium on crutches, missed practice Wednesday. Buckhalter got hurt after gaining 55 yards on five receptions and 37 yards on six carries against the Cowboys. For the season, he leads the team with 267 yards on 37 carries for a whopping 7.2-yard average.

Orton: Big game coming for Royal
Denver QB Kyle Orton maintains that his rapport with WR Eddie Royal may be the best that he has with any Broncos WR. So far, that's translated to just eight catches (7.3 ypc) as defenses have neutralized Royal. 'At some point, he's going to break out and have a big game,' Orton said.
