First Looks: Ten One Design Pogo Stylus
It might well rank as one of the most surprising accusations of cloning we've yet heard: according to Ten One Design, makers of the Pogo Stylus for iphone 3G ($15), the TouchPenSys stylus for iPhones we've previously looked at is a knock-off of their design. Both are metal tubes with a spongy, conductive tip at the end; Pogo Stylus comes packed with a mounting solution to keep the stylus tube clipped on the iPhone 3G when not in use....

Conficker Worm Could Create World`s Biggest Botnet
nk497 writes 'The worm that's supposedly infected almost nine million PCs running Windows, dubbed Cornficker or Downadup, could lead to a massive botnet, security researchers have said. The worm initially spread to systems unpatched against MS08-067, but has since 'evolved and is now able to spread to patched computers through portable USB drives through brute-force password-guessing.'' of this story at Slashdot.

A Waste Gasification Plant In a Truck
waderoush writes 'There are plenty of waste-to-energy plants around the US, but most of them simply burn the waste, dumping carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Gasification technology, by contrast, converts nearly all of the waste into gases like hydrogen and carbon monoxide that can be used to run generators and furnaces. The problem is that most gasification facilities are factory-sized. Now a startup outside Boston has built a combination shredder-dryer-pelletizer-gasifier that fits into 30-by-8-by-8-foot shipping container. The so-called 'Green Energy Machine' can be backed up to a loading dock by truck, processing 3 tons of solid waste per day and putting out enough synthetic gas to run a 120-kilowatt generator or a 240-kilowatt-equivalent furnace. The makers say the machine can eliminate 540 tons of carbon emissions per year, in large part by reducing the amount of waste that goes to methane-generating landfills.' of this story at Slashdot.

Windows virus infects 9m computers
The number of Windows computers infected with the new 'downadup' worm - also known as 'Conficker' and 'Kido' - has exploded to almost 9 million worldwide, from roughly 2.4m last Thursday, according to the computer security company F-Secure.The growth in the number of infected machines - which the company's researchers called 'just amazing' - makes it one of the worst malware outbreaks of the past five years. The principal targets are corporate Windows servers belonging to small businesses who have not installed security updates released by microsoft last October. F-Secure estimates that a third of all potentially vulnerable systems have not had the update. But antivirus researchers are still unsure of the precise purpose of the malware, which is spreading via the internet, through unpatched corporate networks and through USB memory sticks attached to infected computers.First discovered last October, downadup loads itself on to a computer by exploiting a weakness in Windows servers. Internet generation leave parents behind
Children are spending increasing amounts of their lives in front of televisions, computers and games consoles, cramming in nearly six hours of screen time a day, according to research. The online activity is building barriers between parents and children, the authors say, with a third of young people insisting they cannot live without their computer. From the age of seven children are building multimedia hubs in their rooms, with games consoles, internet access and MP3 players, which they wake up to in the morning and fall asleep to at night, according to the study of five- to 16-year-olds. Girls in particular are likely to chat online to their friends at night and 38% take a console to bed instead of a book. Some parents who have stopped their children from having a TV in their bedroom for fear they will watch it too much have justified internet access on the basis that it will help with homework. But the latest from market research agency ChildWise finds children and young teens are mor
