HeliOS Project Kicks It Into High Gear Blog of Helios: 'The HeliOS project is proud to make two announcements. We have committed to two projects in the near future that promises to have a great impact not only on the Austin Community but the Linux and Open Source Community-at-large.' Linux TodayPhantom OS, the 21st Century OS? jonr writes 'Phantom OS doesn't have files. Well, there are no files in the sense that a developer opens a file handle, writes to it, and closes the file handle. From the user's perspective, things still look familiar — a desktop, directories, and file icons. But a file in Phantom is simply an object whose state is persisted. You don't have to explicitly open it. As long as your program has some kind of reference to that object, all you need to do is call methods on it, and the data is there as you would expect.' of this story at Slashdot. CNETYahoo Offers Up New Yahoo Search Feature Seeking a way to stand out in a search-engine competition that includes microsoft and Google, Yahoo began bucket-testing a new search feature, Search Pad, that allows users to manage the information they gather while researching online. Yahoo hopes that the feature, which allows URLs and text to be collected and managed via a pad that opens in a separate business window, will attract users who might otherwise use Google or Microsoft for deeper research. eWeek has broken down some of the most distinctive aspects of Search Pad. - ... eWEEKBest Approach To Keeping a Virtual World Protocol Free to All? arkowitz writes 'I invented a protocol called CICP for interacting with virtual worlds, and filed a provisional patent application on it March 20 of last year. I have since declared the protocol open and public, and contributed an implementation of it to the Sun Wonderland project, which is GPL; and made public the LSL code and accompanying Java servlet for the Second Life implementation of the protocol. I've been collaborating with a fellow in Finland named Tommi S. E. Laukkanen on a new protocol called MXP: Metaverse Exchange Protocol (here's a full description at cybertechnews.com). MXP is and will always be public domain; we intend it to enable an open and ubiquitous metaverse. My question is this: is there any reason to complete the patent app for CICP, which could potentially cover MXP as well, and release it to the public domain? The full app is due by March 20 and the legal work would probably cost my company $10k. Would finishing the patent protect the open and public protocol SlashdotWhy Windows Must (and Will) Go Open Source Attila Dimedici writes 'Charles Babcock of Information Week published an interesting article suggesting that microsoft will have to at least to some degree take Windows open source if they want to stay in business. He suggests that the money to be made from the things MS builds on top of Windows (Office, Server, SQL Server, Exchange, Sharepoint, etc) is so much greater than what can be made from Windows itself that MS will have to give up the revenue stream from Windows in order to maintain these other, more valuable, revenue streams.' of this story at Slashdot. PCmag.comVMware Releases Open Source Virtualization Client ruphus13 writes in with the news that VMware has finally decided to open-source its client for virtual desktops, releasing it under the LGPL. This was in response to intense pressure from the growing number of Linux distros that include virtualization by default. From the post: 'The CEO replacement who entered VMware last year was Paul Maritz, a long-time microsoft executive with intimate familiarity with how Windows swallowed up entire categories of utility software as it grew up by simply wrapping free utilities into the operating system. Paul knows about that, and he had to have seen last year the dual threats to VMware of open source virtualization offerings and virtualization on board in operating systems. The VMware View Open Client allows businesses to host virtualized desktops in the data center, and users can access their desktops from any device. Going with an open source solution like this was VMware's only choice, especially as Microsoft includes Hyper-V virtualization in W Slashdot1 2 |
