EU calls for Icann reform
(Telecompaper) The European Union has called for a reform of the main internet governance body, the International Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. Icann is a private, non-profit organisation run under an agreement with the US government. The current operating agreement expires at the end of September, and the EU wants to see a new multilateral forum and independent judicial body set up to manage and support the internet agency. In particular, EU information society commissioner Viviane Reding called for 'a fully privatised and independent' Icann that complies with the 'best standards of corporate governance, in particular with those on financial transparency and internal accountability, and subject to effective judicial review'. The EU would also like to see a 'G12 for Internet Governance' set up. This would operate as a multilateral forum where governments can discuss general internet governance policy issues.
