MTNL launches 3G mobile service in Mumbai
(Telecompaper) State-owned Indian operator MTNL has launched 3G mobile service in Mumbai, reports the Financial Express. The company expects to rope in 100,000 customers by March next year. MTNL's chairman and managing director RSP Sinha said that the operator's total investment for the 3G launch in Mumbai was INR 2.5 billion. Connections will be available in about a month's time as the company launches the service in south and central Mumbai initially. Sinha said that the company has built up capacity to extend the service to 750,000 subscribers, but due to unavailability of the required spectrum, only 400,000 customers could be served. This launch will soon be expanded to other parts of the city, such as Navi Mumbai, Kalyan and Dombivali, Sinha said, adding that suppliers ITI and Alcatel-Lucent are putting in place the necessary infrastructure. (Telecompaper) Thai communications group True reported a first-quarter net loss of THB 360 million compared to a profit of THB 3.4 billion the year before, due mainly to foreign exchange fluctuations. service revenue for the quarter, excluding interconnection, fell 1.3 percent from a year ago to THB 13.2 billion, while product sales were up 69 percent year-on-year to THB 574 million, helped by the iphone. Total revenues fell 2.3 percent from a year ago to THB 15.57 billion, and EBITDA was down 1.5 percent to THB 5.2 billion. Wireless revenue slid to THB 7.81 billion from 8.23 billion, while at Wireline, revenue remained virtually unchanged at THB 5.4 billion. Pay-TV revenue rose slightly to THB 2.33 billion from 2.25 billion. President and CEO Suphachai Chearavanont said cost controls and reduced interconnection charges helped the company in this quarter, leading to sequential growth in revenue and EBITDA since the third quarter last year.
