Microsoft has come out with three new mice based on the company’s BlueTrack Technology. The BlueTrack Technology allow mice to work on virtually any service. In fact, microsoft says the new mice are like bringing, “four-wheel drive to your desktop”. The BlueTrack Technology is capable of working on services that both optical and laser mice can’t. [...]

How Microsoft Degrades Their Users (In a Good Cause)
blackbearnh writes 'We all know that slow Web pages drive users crazy, but where is the boundary between too slow and too simple? As microsoft's Eric Schurman points out, the fastest-loading page of all is a blank one, but it's also the most useless. In an interview with O'Reilly Radar leading up to his appearance at the Velocity Conference, Schurman talks about his experiences working on some of Microsoft's highest-volume sites, including the home page and Live Search. In particular, he discusses how microsoft will selectively degrade the performance of pages to small sets of users so that they can see how various amounts of delay at different times and places affect user behavior. 'In cases where we were giving what was a significantly degraded experience, the data moved to significance extremely quickly. We were able to tell when we delayed people's pages by more than half a second, and it was very obvious that this had a significant impact on users very quickly. We were able to tur

News - BrandIndex: Microsoft's Laptop Hunter Ads Work
Microsoft's 'Laptop Hunter' ad campaign is working, and is shifting the 'value perception' of the two companies, according to BrandIndex. The firm's most recent survey found that the 18-34 demographic saw an increase in microsoft's value perception, while Apple's fell, and that this happened in conjunction with Microsoft's 'Laptop Hunter' ad campaign.

EDS Is a Bright Spot for HP
Hewlett-Packard's fiscal second quarter saw revenues drop for all the major business segments except for services, which almost doubled revenues thanks in large part to EDS, bought by HP in 2008, HP officials say. Overall, HP reports it saw revenue drop 3 percent over the same period. HP officials say the company will continue to trim expenses and plans to cut another 2 percent of its work force over the next 12 months. - Services was the lone shining light in an otherwise difficult fiscal second quarter for Hewlett-Packard, thanks in large part to its $13.9 billion acquisition of EDS in 2008. In announcing second-quarter earnings May 19, HP officials said the $8.5 billion in revenue that the company's services b...

Mac OS X Users Vulnerable To Major Java Flaw
FruitWorm writes in with word of a vulnerability in Java that has been patched by everyone but Apple. 'Security researchers say that Mac OS X users are vulnerable to a critical, 6-month-old, remote vulnerability in Java, a component that is enabled by default in Web browsers on this platform. Julien Tinnes notes that this vulnerability differs from typical Java security flaws in that it is 'a pure Java vulnerability' and doesn't involve any native code. It affected not only Sun's Java but other implementations such as OpenJDK, on multiple platforms, including Linux and Windows. 'This means you can write a 100% reliable exploit in pure Java. This exploit will work on all the platforms, all the architectures and all the browsers,' Julien wrote. This bug was demonstrated during the Pwn2own security challenge this year at CanSecWest, but the details were not made public at that time. Tinnes recommends that Mac OS X users disable Java in their browsers until Apple releases a security update

Energy Star For Servers Falls Short
tsamsoniw writes 'The newly released Energy Star requirements for servers may not prove all too useful for companies shopping for the most energy-efficient machines on the market, InfoWorld reports. For starters, the spec only considers how much power a server consumes when it's idling, rather than gauging energy consumption at various levels of utilization. That's like focusing on how much gas a vehicle consumes at stop lights instead of when it's moving. Also, the spec doesn't care whether a server's processors have one core or multiple cores — even though multi-core servers deliver more work at fewer watts. Though this first version of Energy Star for servers isn't entirely without merit, the EPA needs to refine the spec to make it more meaningful.' of this story at Slashdot.

Ridiculous Software Bug Workarounds?
theodp writes 'Ever get a workaround for a bug from a vendor that's so rigoddamndiculous that there has to be a clueless MBA or an ornery developer behind it? For example, microsoft once instructed users to wiggle their mouse continuously for several minutes if they wanted to see their Oracle data make it into Excel (yes, it worked!). And more recently, frustrated HP customers were instructed to use non-HP printers as their default printer if they don't want microsoft office 2007 to crash (was this demoed in The Mojave Experiment?). Any other candidates for the Lame Workaround Hall of Fame?' of this story at Slashdot.
