First Looks: PocketMac RingtoneStudio 2 for iPhone
For users of the last two versions of Apple's GarageBand software, creating a ringtone from unprotected iTunes music is a fairly simple process, but there are users who don't have or want to learn GarageBand -- for them, PocketMac's RingtoneStudio 2 for iphone ($30) might make some sense. The Mac application runs in a window shaped like an iphone, lets you drop in audio or video (!) files, and extract the specific ringtone-size sound clip you want.

Microsoft Readies a Rival To Spotify
Barence writes 'Microsoft has confirmed it is preparing to launch a music streaming service. The service will be a direct rival to Spotify, hugely popular in the UK (but unavailable in the US), which allows users to stream music for free in return for listening to around a minute's worth of advertisements every half hour. 'It will be a similar principle to Spotify but we are still examining how the business model will work,' said Peter Bale, executive producer of MSN.' The article claims that the new service will boost the popularity of the Zune player, though how this is to happen is not explained. There doesn't seem to be a close tie-in between device and service, as there is between the iPod and the iTunes Store. of this story at Slashdot.

German Health Insurance Card CA Loses Secret Key
Christiane writes 'The SSL Root CA responsible for issuing the German digital health insurance card lost its secret private key during a test enrollment. After their Hardware Security Module (HSM) dutifully deleted its crypto keys during a power outage, it was all 'Oops, why is there no backup?' All issued cards must be replaced: 'Gematik spokesman Daniel Poeschkens poured scorn on the statement that Gematik had insisted on the service provider carrying out a test without backing up the root CA private keys. 'We did not decide against a back-up service. The fact of the matter is that the service provider took over the running of the test system, so it also has to warrant its continuous operation. How it fulfils this obligation is its own responsibility.''' of this story at Slashdot.
