40 Years After
What a summer for remembrances. Forty years ago, a couple of people landed on the moon, and a half-million of them landed on Max Yasker's farm in upstate New York for the Woodstock festival. That might sound like ancient history, but of course without the space program, who knows where the technology industry would be today.

Apple`s record profits buck recession, thanks to iPhone 3GS
After spending recent months fighting off questions about the health of chief executive Steve Jobs, iPod maker Apple today shrugged off its critics by announcing some of the best financial results in its history.Despite the economic gloom, the Californian technology giant reported revenues for the three months to the end of June of $8.34bn - up almost 12% from the same time last year. That generated profits of $1.23bn, a 15% increase on this time in 2008, and a record amount for the company outside of the Christmas season. The success was achieved largely thanks to the launch of the new iphone 3GS, which went on sale in June - as well as renewed interest in the company's Macintosh computers. Sales of iPods were down year-on-year, although the company hinted that more models were on the way later this year.'We're proud to report the best June quarter for both revenue and earnings in Apple's history,' Jobs, who returned to work a few weeks ago after undergoing life-saving liver transplan

Tata Comm launches 10 Gigabit Ethernet service
(Telecompaper) Indian operator Tata Communications has launched a new 10 Gigabit Ethernet service. As part of Tata Communications' Ethernet services portfolio, 10 GigE uses Tata Communications' global network to satisfy large-scale, wholesale needs for high-speed Ethernet technology across the Atlantic and Pacific and within Asia including India. Available in 25 major cities in eleven countries worldwide, the service connects all key business centres over the self-owned TGN (Tata Global Network) cable system. With a transparent pipe offering both LAN Phy and WAN Phy interfaces, 10 GigE features full-service frame transparency with no QoS restrictions. Frames are forwarded in the order received, ensuring all customer traffic flows in order and without restriction. Customers may choose between protected or unprotected circuits. The service features MEF 6.1 defined Ethernet private line point to point configuration so that customers' data is isolated and travels on its own Ethernet pipe.

Cloud-Sourcing`s Long-Term Impact On IT Careers
snydeq writes 'InfoWorld provides a reality check on the impact cloud computing will have on IT jobs, the overall effects of which will likely resemble those of outsourcing, automation, and utility computing — in other words, a movement away from the nuts and bolts of technology toward the business end of the organization. This shift from 'blue-collar IT to white-collar IT' will be accompanied by greater demand for IT pros experienced with virtualization and Web scale-out deployments, even among midlevel organizations, and greater emphasis on SaaS integration among in-house development teams, analysts say. And though the large-scale impact of 'cloud-sourcing' is likely a decade away, those not versed in vendor contract management, cloud integration, analytics, and RIA and mobile development may find themselves pushed toward the less technical jobs to come, those that will require days full of conference calls and putting out fires caused by doing business in the cloud.'

In consideration for the acquisition, a payment will be made to NextWave in the third quarter of fiscal 2009. No terms of the deal were disclosed.

When It`s Too Good To Be True: Zer01
My pal Nancy Gohring wrote a long feature exploring the unlimited cell offering from Zer01: Is investigative technology journalist dead? Not at IDG News service, at least. Zer01 has been on my radar since last year, when the firm started talking about an unlimited flat-rate cellular voice and data plan. Each time I heard more about the service, the details had changed, and the offer had expanded to sweep in more and more features, like text messaging. Let's just be straightforward here. Even before Nancy had run down the specifics of Zer01, its CEO, and its affiliates and partners' history, it was clear that there was no way for the firm to be able to do what it claims. Nancy ran down a lot of other warning flags, too. (I don't link to Zer01 because I don't want to add to its link score on Google.) The company has said all along it was using GSM. Only two operators, T-Mobile and AT&T, have substantial enough U.S. footprints to provide the roaming Zer01 would need. Neither firm could
