Microsoft proposes browser choice with Windows
(Telecompaper) microsoft has proposed offering customers using the Windows operating system a choice of web browsers, in order to allay competition concerns in Europe. The European Commission confirmed microsoft's proposal for a 'ballot screen', whereby consumers would be shown a screen from which they could easily install competing web browsers, set one of those browsers as a default, and disable Internet Explorer. Under the proposal, Windows 7 would include Internet Explorer, but users could also use the ballot screen to install alternative browsers. In addition OEMs would be able to install competing web browsers, set those as default and disable Internet Explorer should they so wish. The proposal follows billions in fines issued by the commission against Microsoft for anti-competitive practices such as bundling Internet Explorer free with Windows. The commission said it will consider the practical effects of the software company's proposal before deciding whether it meets its requi

Tales From Silicon Valley: The Inside Dope on Apple, OSS, Microsoft and Google
I live in Silicon Valley, and sometimes I wonder if someone's putting something in our water. For instance, one of our local folks, who evidently treated his agorophobia by playing 'Resistance: Fall of Man,' has sued Sony for stealing money from him as a result of Sony's banning him from the game.

Ericsson buys Nortel CDMA business for USD 1.13 billion
(Telecompaper) Ericsson has agreed to buy mobile network activities from Nortel in North America. The Swedish company will buy the CDMA and LTE parts of Nortel's Carrier Networks division for USD 1.13 billion cash. The deal follows an auction of the business by Nortel, and the agreement remains subject to court approval as part of Nortel's bankruptcy restructuring process. The acquisition gives a big boost to Ericsson's activities in the US, setting it up for more business with US carriers as they transition to LTE. The takeover adds 2,500 employees, including 400 focused on LTE. Ericsson beat Nokia Siemens Networks in the bidding, which confirmed it made an 'opportunistic bid' in the auction.

Free Software Foundation Waves Developers Off Mono & C#
The Free Software Foundation (FSF) doesn't like microsoft, doesn't like software patents, it especially doesn't like microsoft's patents, and it doesn't trust the two of them in the same room together. It's convinced that microsoft is eventually going to sue any open source developer who uses Mono, the Novell-supported open source version of Microsoft's .NET widgetry, or who writes open source programs in C#, the Microsoft development language. It's warning off developers now because Microsoft has added both C# and Mono - or rather the ECMA 334 and 335 standards that embrace them - to its two-year-old irrevocable, legally binding Community Promise not to sue.
