Microsoft proposes browser choice with Windows
(Telecompaper) microsoft has proposed offering customers using the Windows operating system a choice of web browsers, in order to allay competition concerns in Europe. The European Commission confirmed microsoft's proposal for a 'ballot screen', whereby consumers would be shown a screen from which they could easily install competing web browsers, set one of those browsers as a default, and disable internet explorer. Under the proposal, Windows 7 would include internet explorer, but users could also use the ballot screen to install alternative browsers. In addition OEMs would be able to install competing web browsers, set those as default and disable internet explorer should they so wish. Security Certificate Warnings Don`t Work
angry tapir writes 'In a laboratory experiment, researchers found that between 55 percent and 100 percent of participants ignored certificate security warnings, depending on which browser they were using (different browsers use different language to warn their users). The researchers first conducted an online survey of more than 400 Web surfers, to learn what they thought about certificate warnings. They then brought 100 people into a lab and studied how they surf the Web. They found that people often had a mixed-up understanding of certificate warnings. For example, many thought they could ignore the messages when visiting a site they trust, but that they should be more wary at less-trustworthy sites.' of this story at Slashdot.

Canonical Cuts Launchpad Loose
Canonical Tuesday open-sourced the code under Launchpad, the software development platform used to build Ubuntu and "thousands of other projects." It said users can now participate directly in Launchpad's development. Launchpad lets developers host and share code from different sources using the Bazaar version control system integrated into Launchpad. Canonical says translators can collaborate on translations across different projects. End users can identify bugs. Contributors can write, propose and manage software specifications. Launchpad's supposed "to erase barriers to collaboration by enabling people to support each other's efforts across different project hosting services, both through its web interface and its APIs." read more
