Luckily, Nathan Barry over at Wired did. Barry came up with 100 things our kids may never know about and listed them. Reading [...]

Antitrust Pressure Mounts For Wireless Providers
Over the past few weeks, the cellphone industry has been criticized on a variety of subjects, from distracted driving to handset exclusivity deals to everything else that's shady within the industry. Verizon's CEO has now responded, addressing what he claims are 'myths' about standard practices. Reader DJRumpy points out that the chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Antitrust, Competition Policy and Consumer Rights has been calling for an investigation into whether competition is being stifled through many of these practices, 'including possible text messaging price fixing and questionable roaming arrangements.' Apparently the new antitrust chief is hitting resistance from within the government over the aggressive inquiries into this and other major industries. However, a small victory was achieved the other day when the National Telecommunications and Information Administration 'told incumbent carriers that they'll have to prove their cases just like everyone else if they want to ch

Feds May Soon Be Allowed To Use Cookies
fast66 writes 'The White House may lift its policy barring federal Web sites from tracking users' online behavior. In place since 2000, the cookie policy issued by the Office of Management and Budget was intended to protect citizen privacy but has sparked criticism — even from White House officials — for hampering citizen outreach. On Friday, Bev Godwin, the director of online resources and interagency development at the White House's new media office, blogged on the White House Web site, 'We want to use cookies for good, not evil' — and invited the public to comment on cookies through various online channels, including the Office of Science and Technology Policy blog.' of this story at Slashdot.

Space Aged: 10 Spacecraft from Decades Past That Are Still Ticking [Slide Show]
Ulysses, a solar-orbiting spacecraft launched in 1990, was finally retired a few weeks ago by NASA and the European Space Agency after nearly two decades of operation. In a huge elliptical loop, Ulysses swung by Earth, orbiting all the way out beyond the orbit of Jupiter, then back over the sun's poles to characterize our star's effects on its environs, only to begin another lap every six years or so. Qualcomm faces competition probe in Japan
(Telecompaper) The Japan Fair Trade Commission has sent a draft order to mobile chipmaker Qualcomm, reportedly accusing the company of abusing its dominant market position. The competition concerns centre on licensing deals with Japanese mobile phone markers, according to Kyodo News, citing sources familiar with the matter. Qualcomm confirmed in a statement that it received the draft order, but is still awaiting a full translation. The US-based company said 'it appears that the draft is directed at common, industry-standard licensing terms that are in fact pro-competitive and were the subject of intense negotiations with very substantial Japanese companies'. Qualcomm has been informed that it will have the right to file a written response before a final decision is rendered, and intends to do so. According to the Kyodo sources, Qualcomm has banned the Japanese makers to which it licenses its technology from filing lawsuits even when Qualcomm infringes their patents, in violation of Jap
