California Student Arrested For Console Hacking
jhoger writes 'Matthew Crippen was arrested yesterday for hacking game consoles (for profit) in violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. He was released on a $5,000 bond, but faces up to 10 years in prison. This is terribly disturbing to me; a man could lose 10 years of his freedom for providing the service of altering hardware. He could well lose much of his freedom for providing a modicum of it to others. There is no piracy going on, necessarily — the games a modified console could run may simply not be signed by the vendor. It's much like jailbreaking an iphone. But it seems because he is disabling a 'circumvention device' it is a criminal issue. Guess it's time to kick a few dollars over to the EFF.' of this story at Slashdot.

KDE 4.3 Released
Jos Poortvliet writes 'After another 6 months of hard work by over 700 people, after fixing over 10,000 bugs and granting 2,000 wishes, KDE 4.3, or 'Caizen,' is here (the release takes its nickname from the Japanese philosophy of continuous improvement). The KDE Desktop Workspace introduces, besides the usual stability and speed improvements, new widgets, the ability to 'peek' in a folder with folderview, and activities tied to virtual desktops. The KDE Application Suites feature improvements in the utilities like a more formats supported in Ark and the return of the Linux Infrared Remote Control system. Instant messenger Kopete introduces an improved contact list and KOrganizer can sync with Google Calendar. Kmail supports inserting inline images into email and the Alarm notifier has gained export functionality, drag and drop, and has an improved configuration. The KDE Application Development platform has seen work on integrating the Social Desktop and the new system tray protocol fro

Null-Prefix SSL Attacks Enabled In New sslsniff
An anonymous reader writes 'Moxie Marlinspike, who recently published new attacks on SSL at Defcon 17, seems to have released the new version of sslsniff which supports these attacks. While the release appears to coincide with a patch from Mozilla, every product that uses the microsoft CryptoAPI is still vulnerable, including internet explorer and Outlook. The new version of sslsniff also supports built-in modes for hijacking software auto-updates that depend on SSL, and apparently includes techniques for defeating OCSP as well — making the elimination of existing null-prefix certificates difficult.' of this story at Slashdot.

Nissan Unveils All-Electric LEAF
MojoRilla writes 'In Japan, Nissan unveiled their all-electric LEAF (press release, and Flash site). Slated to launch in late 2010 in Japan, the US, and Europe, this car will have a 100-mile range, seats 5, has an advanced computer system with remote control by iphone, and promises to be competitively priced. While this car's range won't work for everyone, it could be a game changer as a commuter car.' Recharge time is 8 hours with a 200-volt power source, and 'just under 30 minutes with a quick charger' (no further details given) to charge to 80% of capacity. of this story at Slashdot.

More 3D Image Sensors on the Way
The image sensors that have powered digital cameras for several years are about to undergo a 3D makeover. The next generation of image sensors not only measures the light that strikes them through lenses, but they also will determine the distance of items from the camera, essentially allowing them to 'see' in 3D. I wrote about Fujifilm's 3D digital camera system that the company is researching several weeks ago. Fujifilm's system uses two image sensors to create a 3D result. The next generation of 3D sensors would use just one sensor. Look for the 3D sensors to initially appear in gaming platforms. For example, microsoft recently announced Project Natal, which is a gaming interface that will use a 3D video camera to read and respond to the natural movements of the game player. (Microsoft's announcement did not include any projected release dates.) 3D sensors eventually could appear in and improve the performance of video cameras and still cameras. With still digital cameras, the
