Malaysia plans internet filtering system
(Telecompaper) Malaysia plans to install an internet filtering system similar to China's controversial Green Dam, to block children's access to 'undesirable' websites, Kyodo news agency reports. The move led to protests from netizens, rights groups and the opposition, who stated the move would mainly aim to obstruct anti-government blogs and websites. Information, Communication and Culture Minister Rais Yatim said the government is still studying the filtering process. Independent media watchdog Center for Independent Journalism said the move would be a violation of the commitments made in the promotion of the country's information technology hub Multimedia Super Corridor and in the 'Bill of Guarantees', a bill that ensures the freedom of speech on the internet. The Center for Independent Journalism said the ''real beneficiaries'' of the project are those in power. As the ruling coalition is facing increasing attacks from opposition blogs and websites who are taking advantage of the

New Google Voice App For The Apple IPhone in The Works
Google is building a Web browser-based application for google Voice to run on Apple's iphone. The app will be an alternative to the original Google Voice app iphone rejected, allegedly for duplicating iPhone features. Google declines to provide more details but New York Times columnist David Pogue said it will take the form of a specialized, iphone-shaped Web page. - Apple may have rejected the Google Voice application Google submitted to the Apple App Store two months ago, but the search engine is working on another version of the application to bring to millions of iPhone users, according to a new report from New York Times technology writer Da...

100 Years Ago: A Partial Solution of the Problem of Tele-Vision.
Editor's Note: This story is a supplement to the " 50, 100 and 150 Years Ago " column from the August issue of Scientific AmericanThe problem of tele-vision has long been a favorite one with enterprising inventors. The many telephotographic apparatuses which have been made known in the course of the last few years are the outcome of their endeavors. But the transmission of photographs, drawings, and handwriting over a telegraph wire is incomparably more easy than the instantaneous rendering of the moving objects situated at the transmitting station. 50 Years Ago: Making and Forecasting Ocean Waves
AUGUST 1959 WAVES-- "Man would like to learn the ways of the waves merely by watching them, but he cannot, because they set him dreaming. Try to count a hundred waves sometime and see. The questions asked by the wave watchers are nonetheless being answered by intensive studies of the sea and by the examination of waves in large experimental tanks. The new knowledge has made it possible to measure the power and to forecast the actions of waves for the welfare of those who live and work on the sea and along its shores. In the large tank at the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey, artificial irregular waves approach the variability of those in the deep ocean. In our photograph, the ship model proceeds under its own power; its motions are recorded by means of the apparatus above it." Zen and the Art of Network Architecture
'...I'll have one with everything.' That is the possibly recognizable punch-line to an old joke about the Zen master ordering a hot dog. I am borrowing this as a theme for the on-going transformation of network architecture. Any successful design must follow the functionality required by the end-user. People want to be able to access information, entertainment, work, and all their friends whenever and wherever they happen to be at the time. While we love to talk about Triple-Play, Quad-Play, and Any-Play, we still see (for the most part) operators building on from a foundation of either Fixed-line, or Cable, or Mobile-wireless. With the pending arrival of the fourth generation of cellular radio technology, the Mobile Operator will be able to provide bandwidth and service experiences on par with their Fixed/Cable brethren. But we still have not seen the real shift in thinking which is to take the Zen approach to network design; 'One with Everything'. read more

Several Quantum Calculations Combined At NIST
Al writes 'Researchers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) have demonstrated a crucial step toward building a practical quantum computer: multiple computing operations on quantum bits. The NIST team performed five quantum logic operations and 10 transport operations (meaning they moved the qubit from one part of the system to another) in series, while reliably maintaining the states of their ions — a tricky task because the ions can easily be knocked out of their prepared state. The researchers used beryllium ions stored within so-called ion traps and added magnesium ions to keep the beryllium ones cool and prevent them from losing their quantum state.' In related news, another reader links to an Australian study indicating that quantum computers 'can continue to work perfectly even if half their components, or qubits, are missing.' of this story at Slashdot.

Are Information Technology`s Glory Days Over?
Hugh Pickens writes 'The NY Times reports that computer science students with the entrepreneurial spirit may want to look for a different major, because if Thomas M. Siebel, founder of Siebel systems, is right, IT is a mature industry that will grow no faster than the larger economy, its glory days having ended in 2000. Addressing Stanford students in February as a guest of the engineering school, Siebel called attention to 20 sweet years from 1980 to 2000, when worldwide IT spending grew at a compounded annual growth rate of 17 percent. 'All you had to do was show up and not goof it up,' Siebel says. 'All ships were rising.' Since 2000, however, that rate has averaged only 3 percent. His explanation for the sharp decline is that 'the promise of the post-industrial society has been realized.' In Siebel's view, far larger opportunities are to be found in businesses that address needs in food, water, health care and energy. Though Silicon Valley was 'where the action was' when he finishe
