HP Pavilion Elite m9550f Value Desktop PC
Though priced at $1100 (as of 8/23/09), the HP Pavilion Elite m9550f isn't as fully equipped as less-expensive rivals. And unfortunately, its performance fails to match that of many machines, regardless of their price, on our Top 10 Value PCs chart.

Gateway LX6810-01 Value Desktop PC
At first glance, Gateway's LX6810-01 value PC seems to be an excellent choice priced at a reasonable $800 (as of 8/23/09). The system throws gaming to the curb, however, and while that won't matter to everybody, its failure to match the general performance of one particular PC--one that's $100 cheaper--might make anyone pause.

Micro Express MicroFlex 95B Value Desktop PC
The Micro Express MicroFlex 95B achieves astonishingly strong performance numbers despite qualifying (barely) as a value PC, at a price of $1500 (as of August 23, 2009).

eMachines EL1300G-01w Value Desktop PC
At $298 (as of August 23, 2009), the compact eMachines EL1300G-01w is the least-expensive value PC we've tested at PC World in more than a year. While its performance equals or exceeds that of similarly configured compact PCs, it doesn't rank anywhere near the top of the charts for the value PC category overall. As you might expect, the system appears to be geared toward consumers on a strict budget; if you can afford to move up to the $500 mark, you can pick up a competing machine that more than doubles the EL1300G-01w's performance and offers an even greater jump in storage capacity.

Parallel Processing For Cardiac Simulations Using an Xbox 360
Foot-in-Mouth writes 'Physorg has an article about a researcher, Dr. Simon Scarle at the University of Warwick's WMG Digital Laboratory, who needed to model some cardiological processes. Conventionally, he would requisition time on a university parallel-processing computer or use a network of PCs. However, Dr. Scarle's work history included gaming industry experience as a software engineer at a company associated with microsoft Games Studio. His idea was that researchers could use Xbox 360s as an inexpensive parallel computing platform due to the console's hefty parallel processing-enabled GPU. He said, 'Although major reworking of any previous code framework is required, the Xbox 360 is a very easy platform to develop for and this cost can easily be outweighed by the benefits in gained computational power and speed, as well as the relative ease of visualization of the system.'' of this story at Slashdot.
